After 8 years of having my cars spread out in storage spaces some distance away, without light or the ability to work on them, I have finally secured a great new space not far from home (I live in a village with no space for a garage at my house) that I can keep all my cars and do work and hang out. It is clean, tight, full of light, with electricity and lots of outlets, water and sink, wifi and a work bench. So the basics are there. But it is totally empty.

Now I need to equip it. I'm not a major or even a minor mechanic. I dont anticipate doing engine out stuff or anything technical that I could screw up. I do want to address basic things and I do have wrenches and sockets for my QV and fiat 124 spider and 63 Stude. But I am starting from scratch and wondered what folks here on fchat find most useful, important or really nice to have in your garage. Be it mechanical or esthetic, what do you consider to be the things/tools/amenities that you are glad you have, or wish you had, in your garage?

Electricity, Water, Light. You didn't mention a Toilet, I'd consider that essential.

    Here's what I consider essential

Security System - with camera's (maybe even web-enabled cameras)
Good locks on all entrances and windows.
    Fire Extinguisher
    Air Compressor and Air Tools.
    Tool chest
Good set of Tools - with doubles on most commonly used items.
    good floor jack.
    Jack Stands.
    wheel chocks.
    Lots of cleaning rags.
Respirator or dust filters (if you plan on doing any sanding/bodywork/painting).

    Nice to have

    Lift
    Engine lift
    Engine Stand.
Transmission Jack (many, many more uses than just holding up a transmission)
    Second floor jack.
    Climate Control
    Car dollies.

I'm sure I missed a lot, but that's what I have in my garage.

Many years ago I ran a garage which I started from scratch. I did engine/brakes ect, stuff but also plenty of welding to.

IMO. A lift is the most valuable and versatile tool in a workshop. There is so much you can do with one from lifting a car to making a table! Hanging stuff to dry from it. Heck I even used it as a press to drift bearings one time. If you have the height and the money for it invest in a 2 post 2 ton model. (second hand is also possible) If not, a low lift type sizzor lift, if not that, a quality jack, a pair of ramps &/or axel stands but you'll be on the floor working and that's not comfortable or particularly healthy. It'll also do your knees and back in over time.

Also, a quality workbench is very useful especially if you can roll it around.
A small single phase compressor has its uses but won't run the bigger tools like sanders or shotblasters. You'll need a 3 phase with a big tank for that.

There's a lot of great bargains on eBay. Take a look

    Jeff

See that black square on on my Mondial fender... (Yes I stutter). Its my garage bodyguard and because im an obsessed car collector, i cram my cars in tight places. That thing saves my investments.

Its a simple must have for me and i believe Ricambi sells them now

Aaaah good eye. I condensed 2 houses into one and in the one house i had a spectacular (a collection of vintage from my dad and an accomplishment of my own) home theater that utilized all that old stuff. Sadly in this house it just doesnt work. Now, i dont know what to do with these treasure. So they just sit. :(

Yes some good old stuff in there but sadly, nowadays a slim BT unit / iphone runs the whole back entertainment area. Im going to try to incorporate it into one room, would hate not to.

Mine is dialed in exactly as it should be - nothing not needed in there, and if anything were to leave, it just wouldn't be right

A large, wall-mounted Smart TV that has internet access. Doubles as a PC for viewing technical information (FerrariChat, various owner and repair manuals) while working on the cars. Plus it's my source for streaming internet radio.

I'm connected using a retired Motorola RAZR on a docking station (HDMI to the TV plus USB keyboard/mouse and a Bluetooth/wireless speaker from Creative).

The RAZR can also function as a trackpad when the TV is in full monitor mode but that makes it tricky for scroll/flipping pages in PDFs.

    Exactly this one:

Amazon.com: Motorola HD Station with HDMI Cable and Rapid Wall Charger for DROID RAZR - Retail Packaging - Black: Cell Phones & Accessories

    - What's in the Box: dock; HDMI cable; wall charger; additional adapter plate; quick start guide

These Android smartphones are, of course, PCs that still have wireless internet, Bluetooth, and access to Google's apps. Just about everything works except I don't have a cellular carrier (no phone calls to txt).

The phone itself was sitting in a drawer until, one day, I had an idea... :)

    Hi,

How I wish I have a car lifter. It's essential if one owns a mid engine Ferrari and a also for my old air cooled Porsche 930. And a set of basic tools . I can detail the undercarriage of both cars and I can perform basic maintenance .

I'm a big fan of having a lift. I had one in a garage years ago and now have one again. My brother used it to do heavy work on cars. I found that I used it more often to wax the lower portions of my car. No bending over to do high quality wax work if the car is at chest height! :D

Now I'm into the heavier stuff but I know when it comes time to wax my cars again, they will be on the lift.
