Sorry but I do not understand why you are aggressive ?! I am marine propulsion Engineer and I confirm I can see this failure many times for many root causes. Maybe you can live for a while with this failure and maybe it was the case for this F430 engine until the failure is "too much" for the owner in the case or the engine is not definitely stalling due to general seizure ?
@tifosoi101 you did nothing wrong. Brian is our resident curmudgeon. The fact is he has forgotten more things about Ferrari then I think most know. He insults everyone; Don't take it personal, since he has called everybody an idiot, and when everybody is an idiot, I think I would actually be warier if he hasn't insulted you yet, then you know something is truly wrong. ROFL. Be well. @Rifledriver: Hope Austin is treating you well.
For the record, I think this is the case of two people talking across each other. Sounds like the engine already had issues I also agree of course, you can also have catastrophic failure if the situation is right (or should I say wrong?)
Really? That's all a moderator is going to say? I thought personal attacks were against the rules and generally result in a ban of some sort (at least for most of us). Does being a 'curmudgeon' confer special status?
I try to be pragmatic and take a member's history and context into account. @Rifledriver has been a member inching toward 2 decades of history with 25K posts. I can ban him for 3-7 days (I'll have to ask the other moderators what's the standard amount these days for calling somebody an idiot), but something tells me that won't change anything that 17 years of temp bans haven't already done.
Tell you what, @jcurry i'll put it in @tifosi101 hands. If he contacts me and wants further action, I will accommodate him, after all he was the original party insulted.
Ferrarichat definitely isn't a promised Utopia, that's for sure. That's said, I know there is a camp that wants Brian permabanned. Napoleon the Pig would never put the response firmly in @tisosi101 hands....
great idea, needs a quadruple LIKE button. Could eliminate the "oops" we all focus on trying to avoid.
come back to the topic. So the crank has a dent on the journal(where rod bearing sits). I am pretty sure grinding will not cure dent of that deep. question is, if we grind the crankshaft and the dent somehow still was left there. I am thinking that isn't that much of a problem? Opinions? We are trying to save the crank if after grinding it is still within limits
If this had been an oil pressure failure you would expect to see more white metal on the big end journals, the fact the end main shells are back to the copper backing looks more like a long term failure, no wonder it was knocking on the 5/40. Like you i am a marine engineer of 42 years on steam and motor. Would make a great generator producing 300 kws, just think of the noise it would make.
Where in the OP did it identify the pre-lending knock as bearing related? It is only obvious given the post-mortem pictures.
aaand this is why it's so scary for many to buy a used Ferrari. Sent using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Of course not, no further action ! The forum is here to support the stimulation of debates and discussions. Besides I am a "stranger" here, I am not here to cause problems between old and local members ;-) But I think technical debates are good for the benefit of the forum and our Ferrari cars !
Hi dear "colleague" ! The only thing I wanted to explain here is that it is possible to kill shells and journals in a few seconds.
in your opinion, the crankshaft has to be ground to such a degree that the "dent" disappears completely? Or do you mean we have to somehow treat the "dent" area so that no more flakes of metal to be falling off when the engine is running? i.e. leaving a small pit would be fine?
Are you sure it is a dent, i was thinking it might be a sliver of white metal from the bearing shell, unless i am looking at something different
