1994 modell GT (in case there is some difference between the models)... As probably most of us, I really love the sound of the V12 Ferrari's, but my 456 has the original exhaust and is both quiet and sounds a bit "strangled" from the outside when I floor it. I would like to get the typical howling and crisp "F1 style" sound if possible on high rpm. But not too much resonance on 2-3000rpm when cruising. What is the trick? Yeasterday I saw a clip on youtube of a Japanese 550 with exhaust from Brilliant exhaust or something like that. The noise it made was insane! Does some of the exhaust parts from a 550 fit on a 456? I'm mainly thinking of headers and downpipes as headers for 550 apparently is possible to buy aftermarket, but not 456 ones. I guess the kreissieg would be one of the best sounding, but I really hope to spend a bit less than 8500-9000 USD pluss shipping and 25% import tax to Norway for a new exhaust... Actually I was hoping it was possible to find some used parts, so I could test some different setups. Also I'm looking for movie clips of 456 with aftermarket exhaust, but I can't seem to find any good ones, but with 550 it's easy.
i have seen and heard ones with a tubi installed. frankly i would not want that. it is out of character for this car, makes you look like a wannabe boy racer, and drives you crazy on longer drives.
I installed tubi style mufflers on my 456M. Make yourself your own judgment about such a setup, the sound is as always a question of personal taste. On the 456 you have also the possibility to remove the centerpiece with straight pipes, I guess this is a viable solution. However, your topic has already been discussed several times, I'm sure you will get various proposals how to optimize the sound of your 456. To not drive me crazy on longer drives, I would like it to not make too much rumble on 2-3000 rpm on cruise. And personally I don't think it's that much out of character with a bit more v12 noise. It depends on the color of the car, and what wheels it has. But if course, we can always have our own personal opinions both about how the car should look and sound. One of the main reasons that I bought a 456, was that I could not afford a 550 in the state I want it, and I don't like the typical "look at me I'm a someone"-style of the 90's mid engined cars. I wanted a fast, comfortable and subtitle looking car. But need more sound....
I have X-ost on my 456 GT : [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRpfdnb_Nr8]FERRARI 456 X-OST MARANELLO - YouTube[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IC_Uy0EGHaw]FERRARI 456 GT X-OST MARANELLO RACE - YouTube[/ame]
Ronny- Replace the center resonator/muffler/cork with straight pipes and you will be surprised at the results. Bradan sells them or any good exhaust shop can make up a set out of stainless pipe. Straight all the way, so easy to do. #5 below. If still too quiet, aftermarket mufflers. Image Unavailable, Please Login
For now, I just sent a mail to Nouvalari to order the center exhaust witout the muffler (actually I dont know if they sell the x-pipe or straight pipes). BTW: My center resonator does not look like in your picture, Taz. It looks more normal (not like 2 separate ones), and it says both "Ferrari" and "Ansa" on it. Did Ansa produce the original exhaust for this cars? And would the supersprint headers (or simular) for the 550, fit on a 456?
Ronny- Straight pipes give slightly more hp and torque, but some owners like the sound of an X-Pipe better, and an X-pipe is still a huge improvement over the original center muffler/resonator (with crossover pipe). I am sure those components have changed slightly during production. Ansa did make many OEM Ferrari exhausts. I doubt if any of the Maranello headers would be an easy fit because the exhausts are so different. You would have to do a fit test and see what kind of adapters you would need. Considerable differences between 456 and 550 heads, too.
Here is some pictures of what Nouvalari have for the 456. But I don't belive my car has a slip on type of exhaust. Instead it has the flanges that's showed on Bradan's pipes. Is it some differences of the style between the years the 456 was made? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v710/Heisann/Mobile%20Uploads/FERRARI550575REARBOXES001.jpg And here, the type of connections/flanges Bradan uses, and I belive are the same as on my car. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v710/Heisann/Mobile%20Uploads/1840846d1392045022-bradan-456-resonator-delete-pipes-photo-453.jpg
Ronny- There are likely multiple versions of the exhaust because early 456s did not have catalytic converters. The drawings for the exhaust system in the parts catalogs are not always representative of what was eventually fitted to the cars, so they may have all had flanges on the center pipes. Note the 456M exhaust drawing, very similar, does not show flanges, while the 456 drawing above does. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Don't forget Larini mine make a wonderful '' burble " It transforms the whole driving experience of the car
I did do a custom Sportcat and X-pipe set up for a local customer, the car sounded great and wasn't too loud. We wanted to keep the character and the intentions of the car true so we opted not to do a rear muffler.
Do someone sell straight thru mufflers for the middle section? I've now found some rear pipes without mufflers, and are thinking that probably the x-pipe or straight pipes for the center without dampening would be to loud. Maby Bradan could make? Or maby you at fabspeed?
Ronnie, IMO, the best X pipe for 456 and 550 as well is probably the one from Stebro, because it is more like two pipes joined together, forming a fat oval section for about 400mm and then splitting again in 2 pipes to connect to the tail mufflers. I have that and two old stile Tubi mufflers and I am very pleased with the sound as well as with the performance. A.
After years of trouble, and Dan's passing last year, I did not know that Stebro still existed and made exhaust?? I bought Stebro for my GTV6 back in 2006, KNOWING it would be a lot of trouble (and of course it took me half a year and a lot of e-mails to get it), but did it anyway because that on the GTV6 it's simply absolutely no other manufacture witch comes EVEN CLOSE to the heavenly sound it makes on that old busso engine!! If it's possible to get hold of stebro, and the quality of the welding is good (saw some really bad work in arround 2009-2010), I would probably buy it...
If you want loud do the tubis with braden muffler delete. If you want less noise just drive in 6th gear, the car has lots of torque.
I did not know Dan passed away. I did not deal with Stebro since a few years ago, so I would not know if they are still in business.
I just ordered the pipes from Bradan and are now about to order the rear boxes from Nouvalari, but first I need to be 100% sure of one thing! Are the rear mufflers on the old GT and the newer Modificata of the same types/sizes? Do the flanges fit? Nouvalari did not know about that the older cars used a flange fitting for front pipes and center exhaust, so they only sell a slip on type there. But their back boxes have a flange, so I guess they are bolt on on the older GT-modells? Or are they not? Thanks!!
There is one moreoption of good sounding exhaust-system, no so common in the US: Fuchs ESD Fuchs is a old German manufacturer of high quality exhausts for Maserati and Ferrari (and others) Ferrari F456 - Rudolf Fuchs GmbH - Exhaust Systems - Exhaust Sound Design I am not sure how the distribution in the US is working, but usually these exhausts sound absolutely perfect. Not to loud, not like a Formular-1-Car, just as a Ferrari should sound. I have the Fuchs Export S on the F355 and I will try to get one for my 456 as well.
Today I mounted the Bradan center pipes and Nouvalari rear exhaust on my 456. I think it sounds very nice! Not too much at normal driving either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQp-pS-ilhk&index=1&list=UUvActM0wKWzk8qBpqTnvrrA Sorry for my coughing.
A video from the inside also. Both a tunnel and the open road. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI6KYXPQ2VQ&list=UUvActM0wKWzk8qBpqTnvrrA
