There was an article in the November Bloomberg Magazine and the author mentioned "fly yellow" refers to the color's ablility to attract insects. I always thought it stood for Ferrari Light Yellow?

COLOR DEVELOPED BY STUDIO FLY IN MODENA. PAINT CODE 20Y191. IT HAS A SLIGHT GREENISH CAST UNDER FLORECENT LIGHT.

STUDIO FLY'S WORK APPEARS IN SOME OF THE BOOKS. I REMEMBER A 365GT/4 BEACH BUGGY THEY DID AROUND 1974.

If it's "ferrari light yellow" then isn't "fly yellow" a little redundant? Also why does Lamborghini also have a fly yellow?

I have heard the same thing, but the other explanation actually makes more sense. Otherwise it would be Ferrari Light Yellow Yellow.

Does not sound very Italian. Do not know the word for light but Giallo does not start with a Y.

Ferrari had and has a lot of yellows. Fly yellow was mid 60s to early 70s. There were also other yellows in that time frame and subsequent. I dont think it was a production color on later cars.

See this weeks autoweek article about the new motor Ferrari built for a customers 275GTB . That is what Fly Yellow looks like under Florecent light.

There indeed is/was a Studio Fly in Modena, run by a former Ferrari engineer named Giacomo Caliri. Caliri apparently worked with several F1 drivers, including Fittipaldi.

BTW - the word for "light" (as in color, not weight) is "chiaro"

The reason that Ferrari Light Yellow is an acronym in english is that the color and acronym reportedly originated from Luigi Chinetti, the US importer for Ferrari (and NART team head.)

Keep in mind that many paint colors, such as British Racing Green, French Blue have appeared on cars not made in the UK or France. There are many cars that have been available in "German Racing Silver," yet Germany's official racing color is actually white.

My guess is that Lamborghini just thought Fly Yellow was a standard color name and they were unaware of the history.

I'm sure if we all dug, we could find colors that correspond to a specific make or model being used on another make due to a lack of research by a modern marketing department.
