I have noticed that there are quite a lot of Pagani Automobili fans on here (including me, I do have signed brochures etc.), but that's understandable as we are a supercar marque fans on a car forum. Someone noted in one of the LaFerrari threads, that Mr. Pagani was the new Mr. Enzo - when, also understandable to some extent, some members disliked the notion as Pagani Automobili didn't build their own engines.

    What are your thoughts?

    My thoughts:
Mr. Horatio and Pagani is a leap ahead of Mr. Enzo and Ferrari. Reason being that Mr. Enzo borderline hated his rich poseur customers, while Mr. Horatio constantly underlines the importance of buyer satisfaction. The second thing is that Mr. Horatio himself designs his cars from scratch as an artist, pouring his passion in to everything that makes the car - we are all aware of his obsession with details, materials, design and technology. Third, he didn't start a company to make money - which is basically what Mr. Enzo did as he wanted to make money to fund his racing (as of course every Ferrari fan knows) - he started a company based on a passionate vision of a no compromise supercar.
First, as for the engine - it is specifically designed for the Pagani cars - I see absolutely nothing wrong with that - what I would have had issues with is if they had been fitted with production engines found in other production cars (like the Weismann uses BMW V8s and V10s, the Mosler uses Corvette V8 etc.).
And, finally, Mr. Horatio managed something you and I will never be able to pull off - create a highly respected (feared) competitor to the worlds most established marques in less than a decade.

    Some random facts:
First Pagani, the C12 (five made), was sold in 1999, and in 2004 his cars where giving the very best of Ferrari and Porsche (the two most significant sportscar marques of today) a good run for their money in worldwide comparison tests. The Zonda F smashed the Nürburgring record (7:28 IIRC) while the Enzos suspension was overheating after a lap or two (reference; Evo Magazines Enzo v Zonda F v CCXR v Carrera GT Nür' lap test).
Lamborghini wasn't even mentioned in the same sentences as Pagani unless you talked about Mr. Horatios past as a Lamborghini trainee! I also find it extremely fascinating that NONE of Zondas has depreciated yet! How remarkable is that?

Today, with the latest breed of hypercars, Pagani Huayra is being compared with the very best Italy, Germany and Great Britain has to offer - not bad for a family owned business is it.

My life's ambition was to be a Ferrari owner. I have been Tifosi for as long as I can remember. I can truly say that I absolutely love Pagani. These cars are amongst the top of the food chain. Although I am a diehard F50 and 288 GTO fan, I consider the Zonda and Huyara at the same level. I absolutely prefer these 4 over a Veyron or CCX. My DD is an AMG, so I love how Pagani uses the AMG V12 as their powerplants. All of these cars mentioned are the ones that would excite kids enough to have them as posters on their bedroom walls, kind of like the Countach, BB in my adolescence.

It's pure driving. Mr Pagani is just a ''privateer'' that entered the world of super cars without any major help and financial help from a big (mother) company. Although i love Ferrari and always will be, i think Pagani is a little step ahead in comparison with Ferrari. It's the way he manufactures the cars and the ''freedom'' he gives them without m(any) electronics. Except these things we have the details and technology in each component separately and the way he uses materials like carbon/aluminium/leather....it's very personal. His cars look like sculptures/art.
I really admire that a small family owned business like Pagani developed to such an extent and competes giants manufacturers like Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Koenigsegg etc.

And as DriveAfterDark mention above: not bad for a family owned business.!

Any true Italian tifosi loves all Italian marques equally :)

We are in a different era so it's hard to compare them directly but I agree that Mr Pagani is the modern day equivalent of Mr Ferrari or Mr Lambo :)

Another random fact is that the Zonda won evoCOTY back in 2001 :)

I, like many here, have grown up adoring Ferrari's. Up until the late 2000s the F40 and F50 where the 2 ultimate cars to own. The Zonda was always up there but with the Cinque upgrades for the Zonda it all changed. That Titanium/Inconel exhaust, the attention to detail (of previous Zonda's already), the aggressive wing and roof scoop just did it for me. The noise it makes is sensational, it looks fantastic, the engine is incredible, the attention to detail & engineering is second to none (Ferrari Enzo is poor in comparison).

The incredible thing with the Zonda F is that has all the power and speed of an Enzo, yet has a fully functioning interior with a sound system, fantastic aircon etc and a huge V12...yet weighs in 100+kg less than an Enzo!

Then the Cinque and 760s came...

When I have the means to afford these sort of cars the Zonda they can pry from my cold dead hands rather than selling it. It is my ultimate car and I seriously doubt that another similar car will ever be created with increasingly (pointless) environmental requirements going on, and cars becoming heavier and heavier with the ever increasing need for airbags for your ears and left nipple and radar guided driving for the feeble. The Zonda is still as much mechanical as I'd like.

The Zonda, for me, is simply the best.

Adding to my last post, you can see the enverironmentalists demands already happening with the Huayra. Pagani is not a rich company and had to look out to the future and therefore had to look, sadly, at a twin turbo V12. I watched the whole Nat Geo documentary about the car and whilst I love the engineering behind it, it still sounds wrong to me. They even got some famous sound engineer in but I don't think it really helped.

AMG first gave them a V8 (forgot if it was supercharged or turbocharged) but Horatio refused because he thought his clients would only want a V12.

I can't help but think that the Huayra would've sounded much better with an SLR type engine in the back...:(

I think something Ferrari could learn (or re-impose on themselves) is to limit production of thier current models.

Paganis are fantastic. I would LOVE to have a 760RS, only obstacles are the $2.5M & not allowed on US roads :(

I met Horacio several times, he is a very nice, brilliant, humble person

Btw he started sweeping the floors at Lambo :)

Depends on whether an they could increase the unit price enough not to make up for the loss of unit volume. As long they can sell everything they can build at the current price, the natural move is to raise prices, not to reduce volume.

Pagani has taken the magic or art of the car to a new level. Ferrari have been doing it forever and Lamborghini used too, though not as much since Audi ownership IMO.

In comparing Pagani to Ferrari the only thing they lack is the racing heritage (though obviously there is a link with AMG and MB). Their interiors are simply amazing....I love them and would consider having one in my garage with my Ferrari's (if I could afford one that is)

Agreed. The Huayra is an upgrade over the Zonda in so many ways, but certainly not in the soundtrack department.

I still completely admire Pagani. It's amazing what he's done in this day and age.

I don't think Pagani is comparable to Ferrari. Ferrari's history is rooted in racing and the cars are derived from and exist(ed) to support that, inextricably linking them. Pagani has no such history and no such link. Pagani is more similar to Lamborghini, who decided he didn't like what was available and he should build his own cars to be better.

If anything, Pagani is more pure. He is building his cars for the love of building cars, not because he's mad at Ferrari or he wants to make money or qualify a car to go racing. He just has a vision in his head and wants to realize it. That resonates with me more than Ferrari or Lamborghini (or anyone else, really). I love the idea of Pagani but if I'm honest, Ferraris appeal to me more in terms of styling and engineering and ultimately that's what I value over the history or motives (to a degree) for them. What has and does make Ferrari great is their direct link to their racing cars and being an engineer, that appeals to me on some base level that the Pagani cars don't. I want to like the Pagani cars more than I actually do...

You put a contemporary Ferrari & Pagani together or anything and a Pagani and the insane over top detail excellence of the Pagani makes everything else look like an Ox cart

There is no equalling Pagani on attention to detail & obsessive compulsive perfection

Having been a tifosi for decades, the one car that comes close in the last decade is a Pagani. I was a huge fan of the Zonda, and even though having only seen 2 or 3 in the flesh, it left an indelible impression.

Recently I watched the Nat Geo Superfactories episode on the Huayra. What a priviledge to see Horacio at work. He is a true perfectionist - the detail put into each component is extraordinary. Also, what was amazing was the manner in which he encouraged, cajoled and inspired other suppliers in the region to up their game to be worthy of his levels of perfection.

I dont really care whether he machines his own engine blocks or buys in ready-made AMG units. When you look at the ingenuity of other aspects of the car such as the adjustable wings on each corner, you have to hand it to the man. Brilliant!
