I've only shot a couple pictures with it, but so far I like it a lot. It had all the features I was looking for (ability to use the screen as a viewfinder, HD video) and it has 14.2 mp so the detail it captures is way better than any camera I've ever had. After looking around it was one of the best values I could find. You should be able to get one online with a lens included for $600 or less.

A dude at work just bought a D7000 (not the one I've mentioned before) and we compared his camera against a EOS 7D.

At the high ISO the Canon get OWNED big time! I am surprised there is THAT much difference.

In normal light the Nikon get owned by the Canon as well as in movie.

But the ISO was quite surprising.

The price is also a big difference. I paid right around $1400 for my D7000 and 18-105mm. 7D and 18-135mm is roughly $2k. That is quite a bit of difference and I can't image the image quality that big of a difference. I absolutely love this thing, it does basically everything really well. I think the one pit-fall to the 7D is the pro-AF in the Canon, but for casual shooting it really won't make a difference.

Trust me, the image quality at ISO 6400 was immense.

Standing 4 meters away from the machine we took a pic of.

The 7D had a really good, but also grainy shot.

The D7000 had a fantastic shot. If you zoomed in on the screws on the machine, you could actually still clearly see the screw's slot eventhough the screw only was around 6-7mm in diameter.

We are going out soon to shoot some more pics together. Hopefully we can get a better comparison.

Apart from all that, the physical appearance of the cameras is quite different. The Nikon is extremely confusing I think. Very busy and illogical design compared to the Canon.

I agree with the physical appearance, coming from the original 5D it was a massive leap. But after a few weeks with it I know where everything is and have gotten used it, a lot of it you really don't need, but it's nice having it there if you do.

Let's pull this thread out of the archives.

I decided that in the next few months I'm going to start rebuilding my favorite camera and lens kit that I've had; Canon 5D I, 17-40L and 100mm f2. I love my RX100 because I can take it anywhere, it's effortless and it produces fantastic results. However after looking back over some of my old shots I LOVE the original 5D for the images it produces, they just seem to have so much life to them, not sure what it is, but I prefer the look to the 5D2. The 5D2 has a real sterile quality to it, technically great photos, but somethings missing. My main reason for getting rid of the 5D was that it wasn't a very convenient camera and you really had to work with it to produce great shots, not very good for casual shooting. I think for me the original 5D and the RX100 will be perfect companions, it also helps that the original 5D is sub $500. :)

A couple of favorites with the 5D:

I agree. That picture really grabs my eye for some reason. The angular 308 stands out aainst the right angles of the houses in the background.

listen to what he says about the D4 being too fast, you do not need 10+ frames per sec..7 is more than enough

I always thought my 40D had the perfect fps at 6.5, anymore and you're just wasting space.

Love my d3 and in some instances Ch is the only way to get the shot. It's digital so you just delete the ones that didn't make it.

Sometimes I want more MP than I use something else.

I dislike how "reds" look in digital, too pinkish. But then again, I don't have any software to tweak the colors.
