I have 365 GT4 2+2 #18497. My owner's manual, as well as a 365 GTC4 repair manual, specify "ATE Type S" brake fluid. ATE no longer lists such a fluid, and googling didn't turn up an explanation. Anyone know what this was? I don't believe it was silicone, notwithstanding the "S".

And regardless -- any reason to use anything other than a standard DOT 3 fluid?

    Thanks!

My -78 400GT is listed with Agip F1 DOT3 or ATE Blu S DOT3. Both are glycol based fluids - so no silicone.

DOT3 was the quality available at that time and you would be absolutely fine using the same today. I'm not sure if the brake system in our cars should use DOT4 as it contains borate esters - but it would probably be fine. DOT4 also absorbs water faster but has a higher boiling point.

    Pros and cons :)
