Brunch means Eagle Rare, homemade biscuits, and homemade cornbread. Nowhere on the planet gets *everything* right.....but man the South sure does brunch proper.

Picked this up recently, interested to discover if it's worth the price of admission.

Also been testing an urban myth that Hancocks's is same as basic Blanton's that you can get for cheaper.

It isn't, it is much better imo. Probably why it's now harder to find and more expensive than Blanton's. :)

On the trip back north we stopped for fuel, and needed to snag a bottle of Grey Goose for our ferret sitter. Naturally I explored a little and saw this on the shelf. Never saw it before let alone tried it.

    It's delicious.

Another illuminating evening of side by side testing.

Bardstown Discovery Series 3 is one of my favorite pours of all time. All the available bottles seem to be gone. Every pour is a mixture of ecstasy and depression, the former because it's so good, the latter because it brings me closer to ambrosia's end.

I cracked open the DS4 to see if it measures up, hoping that it does because there are still bottles available.

The short version is it doesn't. The 4 is still exceptional bourbon that without having tasted the 3 would still be at the top of most people's list. So don't get me wrong, if you run into a bottle and it's less than $200 just go ahead and buy it if you can. But it's 75% the bourbon that the 3 is.

As much as the distiller's mix of barrels and batches is the main variable, these things have some randomness built into them. The DS3 is a congruence of genius and fortune resulting in whiskey perfection, at least for my palate.

Should anyone here run into a bottle of DS3 and doesn't want it for themselves, please let me know and I'll be happy to work out a trade for it with some other exceptional bourbon that you like of much greater market value like a Michter's 10 bourbon or a Kentucky Owl Batch 9 bourbon.

And again, if you run into a DS4 do yourself a favor and buy it.

Let the 4 oxidize a couple months and then try it. It may open up quite a bit and narrow the gap.

Blanton's is not worth the hype, IMO.

    It's a fantastic 60-dollar bottle.

    It's straight up a no-brainer at 43 a bottle. ;)

I wouldn't get it on the secondary and tell friends not to as well.

There are scads of other bourbons that are superior at $43 and $60 per bottle.

So I got a couple of bottles of this bourbon a little while ago at the recommendation of a fellow enthusiast. They're 375ml so it works out to about $80 if it were regularly sized bottle of bourbon.

It's reaaaaly interesting. It doesn't make a substantive first impression, it's light colored and super subtle, but about five seconds in it flourishes into a wonderfully complex rendition.

As opposed to a whiskey that punches you in the face and then fades to nothing, this one barely makes an introduction, but leaves a lasting impression.

I'm going to investigate their batch 1, but batch 2 is wonderful. I will however say that it it might need a developed palate to grasp it's subtle complexity ... if you don't nerd out on this stuff it might register as dull even though it's anything but.

Then today at the bourbon store I ran into these interesting releases ... don't know much about them but they seem to have positive reviews:

Friend of mine picked up the 14-year rare perfection and poured me a sizeable sip. I really enjoyed it. Hope you do too!!
