    Hi all,

My Digiplex boxes are on the blink, and need replacing. I am looking for an alternative to the Marinelli boxes on my 1980 GTBI. I know this is the problem as it runs fine when switched to known working ones.

My first search has lead me to this solution at ATS racing.

    http://www.atsracing.net/Parts/Details/FerrariIgnition

Has anyone used this or have an opinion on alternative solutions?

    Appreciate your feedback.

    Thank you

When David had a shop up north he rebuilt my 1982 308GTSi boxes. To the modified European spec. Including a soft rev limiter. Perfect ever since. I also replaced the 3 pick ups, and coils. Runs like champ ever since. David now is in Florida…. Try reaching out to him.

I can also recommend David Fienberg's shop. He has done many for me.

Thank you very much. Can you expand on the euro tune option? More hp / torque? Any drivability issues?

I was going to recommend David F., too, but that street address (and his prior internet address) now go to something called Elite Motorworks (more "euro" stuff than F stuff). Did David sell-out, retire, vanish?

Not sure what you mean exactly by being on the blink, but I had an issue with mine where one bank would randomly drop out and then come good. After much searching I eventually found some bad solder joints where the ecu multi pins were attached to the motherboard. I resolved and it’s been flawless since. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Hard to believe those solder Points fail like that. Cudos for resolving that particular issue.
As I don’t know exactly what is going on with mine, the allure of having someone like David look it over and upgrade the tune at the same time is compelling. David texted back on the euro tune explanation.

“Very simply stated, the US market cars have modified ignition curves (severely retard) to comply with emission requirements in the 80s. These curves hampered performance considerably. The Euro curves were much more aggressive resulting in considerably better performance. I'd highly recommend that you go with that option as the cars simply run better!”

So happy to have this forum for all the expert advice and sharing of knowledge and contacts.

Digiplex in 1982 had a US option and a European option. You can look at the service manual for details Different advance curves for different vacuum points etc. Speaking with David when he was doing my boxes he asked exactly what I wanted. He recommend a European option but he mentioned a little bit more improved. He also put a rev limit or on it… He said it was a soft rev limiter… Meaning that it slowly dropped out a couple of cylinders instead of cutting everything out at once… Easier on the engine if you over rev it…

Please note that I have removed all emissions equipment from my car and I set my cams at the European spec. I did notice an increase in performance that could be mainly to the fact that my old Digiplex ran so poorly… But I also noticed that I had increased gas mileage… very happy overall with everything David did and I highly recommend him if you can get in touch with him. I sent my old boxes in, he reworked them and send them back….

I also had my WUR rebuilt and my fuel distributor rebuilt at the same time… Just saying……..

I just re-read this and you said there is a an improved European tune available?
I like the idea of a rev limiter as well. Did you ever put you car in a dyno after the changes?
My car had all the smog removed when I bought the car. Just put a Nouvari exhaust on it which should help it breath a bit.

Ive sent ecu's to Specialized ECU repair (ecu doctor) in FL in the past. They also sold me a replacement once where the antenna hole let water inside the injection ecu. I could see the water line inside the ecu housing showing how full it had been in the past.

in my car the antenna is on the opposite side of the ecu’s. Is there a custom fitting for the antenna whole to prevent water egress?

Ignition units are always on the LHS, Lambda control unit on the right (when equipped). This is true of all LHD 3x8s with OEM antennas. Well known and documented problem....

See pic of my Digiplex vs. antenna. Digipl x on drivers side. Antenna on the other.
Any chance my antenna was relocated?

The North American spec (and probably other countries) QV and 328 had an ECU on the right under the antenna. The ECU controlled a frequency valve and looked at an O2 sensor among other things.

Yes, thanks for the update (Dave also sent me a conversation with his contact info, but he posts here anonymously so, if he wants to post it, he can. He confirmed that he still does the Digiplex/Microplex stuff.)
