I have owned a beautiful Nardi steering wheel that has only one mar on it from the previous owner. He apparently wore a ring on his left hand as the finish is ground off to the wood for 1"to 1/12" on the unseen side at about 7 o'clock. I can't really tell if the wheel is lacquered or varnished. I am perfectly capable of refinishing, or touching-up if I know what for certain to use. Any and thoughts are invited and welcomed . I plan to fit it to my 400i,as I have all of the proper adapters. It will compliment nicely, the new cognac leather interior, stitched in red. Thank you all so very much. Jq.

    Sounds nice.

Why don't you just call Nardi or email them as perhaps they used both processes on different steering wheels?

Can you provide a pic of your interior?

I am thinking of buying one for my Brown Metallic 308 GTSi but I just don't know. A Little pricey on eBay.

    Hi there Jacques,

I can not tell you what exactly you need, but i can tell you what you donot need.

I've come into the posession of a Nardi wheel that was pretty run down and have put some effort into restoring it, but i've missed the nice colour the original Nardi wheel had. I was guessing for one layer of Deep mahogany Varnish, complemented with another couple (at the moment 6 layers) of blanck highgloss varnish (both from Rambo, not sure if it's available elsewhere but in Holland) But it turned out a bit darker then i had expected. So basically, to get that nice almost Yellowy wood colour that Nardi produces, you shouldNOT i repeat shouldNOT use the combination i used. But since nobody had a colourslate for me it was unfortunately all trial and error here.

Oh, and.. ehm.. i might be committing blasphemy on a Ferrari Forum, but i'll be honest. I donot own a Ferrari, at the moment i do not even own a car but i do own a simrig. You might have no clue what it is, dont worry, most people donot, untill they get to sit in it and actually feel at home, like they are driving an actual car.

Why am i saying this, well.. here's the pictures of how it was and how it's turned out.

You should be able to click on the pictures to watch the project come to life.

Right now the wheel is sitting with it's final layer on, waiting for the next 7 days to harden out before i get to bolt it back on and actually use it. Yes, you need to let it sit for 7 days!

This is basically what i do with it:

And in case you are wondering... i did a 4 hr stint on Zandvoort to see if simracing is getting close to real life...
(bad microphone, so no sound during racing)

Good luck with the lackering Jaques, i hope to see photo's of your project! I know it's essential for you to get the right colour back, I personally think you should find the lightest varnish you can find, yellow coloured as the blanck varnish will always make it look a bit darker. And remember.. sand the varnish down, only then apply the first coat, if you only sand down the damaged parts, you WILL not ever have a good matching colour all around the wheel. If you cant get the research right, you might as well do what i failed to do: Get yourself a piece of original mahogany, sand it down, dust it off, (wear plastic gloves on bear wood!) try the varnish on... wait a 4 hrs to put the first layer of blanck varnish on it... and another after 4 hrs... might take a couple of days, but at least then you will have a strip of what your colour should look like on the wheel. Hoping that you got the same mahogany as the wheel, which you can only see once you've sanded down the wheel itself.

BTw: Bought my Nardi for 50 euro's..

No matter what you do with it Jacques, you will know that you all did it yourself.. it's a VERy rewarding feeling!

    Regards,

    Frank.
