As I prepare to begin my ill-advised project to build my own exhaust system on my new-to-me 87 TR (details forthcoming in another thread, success or not), I dont want to do any harm. I will have to MIG weld the parts on the car, at least tack weld them. i really dont want to damage any electrical parts, especially the fuel injection and ignition modules. On other cars, the party line seems to be to disconnect the battery, and then you dont have to worry about the on board computers.

Should I unplug all the modules from their harnesses while welding? Or is it safe to tack weld with battery disconnected?

I have always disconnected ecus from harness on all cars. It's a simple thing to do to prevent potential damage real or imagined. I have done a lot of welding on cars.

Its really easy to do and takes literally about 1 minute. No down side so might as well take the pecaution.

I have seen some really nice, custom made one off systems in TRs. If you are a good welder/fabricator show us when done.
