I had always heard that the Renault & Ferrari characters were "inside" joke references to the cars in the movie. This was complicated by the fact that some people thought the Peter Lorre character was named Bugatti (actually Ugarte).

Then I realized that Ferrari didn't start as a car manufacturer until 1947, while the movie came out in 1941. Any idea whether they were referring to Ferrari as a person then or if it was just pure coincidence that they ended up with a couple of car mfr names for these characters?

I've never heard this before and think that it's very unlikely that an automotive connection was intended. You also have to realize that you're talking about a French automobile manufacturer and a future Italian automobile manufacturer, neither of which would be marketing their cars in this country for another decade.
