When renewing all vacuum hoses, i have discovered what i would call wrong connection of both warm-up regulators. The way the hoses are linked is resulting in part-load enrichment rather than lean mixture according to the way i understand the system. The workshop manual is showing the connections the way i would expect (just the other way round, i.e. red to the manifold and yellow to the throttle upstream side). Since everything lookes factory installed, the only reason could be the special Swiss emissions concept which has e.g. a different ignition wiring and setting as well. However i could not imagine how the part load enrichment should help emissions.
Before changing the hoses back to the usual connections i just wonder what the Fchat specialists will know about.

Just before i bought the car it has passed annual emissions test (which is performed in Switzerland in idle conditions only).

    Your advice is welcome

John, thanks for the K-Jetronic link. It confirms what i knew from other sources: the vacuum hoses in my car are connected wrongly to the warm-up regulator. In the meantime i have swapped the hoses and i have also tried to get a better balance between the banks. Nevertheless i could not find any sign that the system had been modified after leaving the factory. The hose diameters were matching the pipe connections whereas after the swap there are now different connection diameters on the two ends of each of the hoses.
The left bank also used to produce fewer vacuum on idle which had a negative influence on the power brake as well. But eventually i will need an emissions tester to get the proper setting for both banks and to keep emissions within the correct range.

That's odd, I thought the 400i's had a separate vacuum pump driven of the forward side of the right bank for the booster. Intake manifold vacuum shouldn't be affected by power brake booster if the booster diaphragm is ok or unless you pump it many times in short succession...

Pump visible here on far right (ignore yellow lines), big hose out the bottom of the pump goes to the booster:

    Hi Peter,

I know the picture. It is from my car, attatched to a previous thread! The power brake is actually supported by the manifold vacuum and the extra vacuum pump. The vacuum pump alone is not quite sufficient for the power brake at idle speed.
