I just got a 2013 458. It’s only has the USB port in the glove box. No 30 pin port. I have been sifting through the various threads, and I gather my setup only allows for downloading music. I really want to stream music from my iPhone. And I don’t want to transmit through the radio. And I don’t want to use the CD player. Does anyone have any experience solving this problem? (I know the engine alone sounds pretty great. But I still want to be able to listen to music occasionally). Thanks in advance

The Bovee uses a 30 pin connection. Since you don't want to stream through the radio a FM transmitter is out but is is not a bad option. You could use a USB thumb drive with a library of music on the usb. Another option is to get an old Ipod with a lightning cable to USB cable and stream from that. Another option is to get a 30 pin to USB adapter cable put a Bovee on it and stream to the Bovee through the adapter cable to USB.
Believe me, the infotainment system in the 458 is crap. Stock speakers are usually shot and underpowered. I had mine converted to an apple car play with frt/Rear camera inputs with a whole new amplifier system at great expense, then the radio/ NIT unit took a dump so there was that.

Thanks. This car I got has the upgraded JBL stereo system. So I wanted to be able to use it. What I’m picking up from the threads is that the USB port only allows for downloading, regardless of whether I attach a Bovee or not. And not for streaming.from my iPhone. I wonder if the dealer has some set up that would allow me to stream directly from my iPhone to the stereo

In all honesty for simplicity I'd recommend a FM transmitter in the cigarette lighter or hardwired and hidden that your phone bluetooths to and you've got your streaming capability. I'd try that first and see how you like it. I was pleasantly surprised. I use it in my truck now since I did pay thousands for apple carplay conversion in the 458. You are right. My 458 had both the USB port and the 30 pin plug that the Bovee used. I only used the USB once to upload stuff to the HDD then the months later the NIT took a dump later on in the game so had to have whole system repaired then the apple carplay worked well again.

. There is a Chinese co that makes a bluetooth adapter for the 458 that can be DIY installed with cables and the unit. That might be an option.(Unknown Quality) I did have a Bovee but it was very unreliable and didnt have good sound. Kudo's to @Fred Daniali for pointing me in the direction of United Radio, Syracuse NY. who repaired the NIT unit. Now alls well. (finally)

You are correct. USB only allows download to the hard drive, not playing off a USB drive. The hard drive continues to be my preferred solution. I do have the 30 pin connector and have tested older iPods, Bovees, Inverys, and a couple other bluetooth streaming solutions. I also did the FM radio transmitter, but I always go back to the hard drive

I do not know at which point (MY) the USB began to allow to play from an external support. On my 488 (delivered in September 2015) the USB allows to play from a USB drive or an ipod connected with USB.

What kind of CarPlay setup did you get?

As mentioned there’s the Chinese Bluetooth adapter you can buy. I just got the Chinese CarPlay box from the same vendor and it works well enough to do wireless streaming (and CarPlay). I am currently running wired as well just for the reliability. Only current issue is getting the mic working for phone calls.

I didn't research it that well when I bought my 458 and I thought I could just plug in my phone which of course I was wrong. The car did have a ton of Usher downloaded on it which was about the only thing I could get to work until I got the FM transmitter. Sound was garbage but gave me something to listen to on a long trip (2.5 hours to the track). Other than that I am a "listen to the engine" type of guy. At any rate, if you need tunes FM transmitter is pretty simple to use. I bought one at a truckstop.

Professionally installed at JML audio in St Louis. Don't know which carplay module he used, but it is integrated with the rt TFT and I added front and rear backup cameras. He will not use Chinese electronics as he doesn't want the headaches. I also added an upgraded amplifier, speakers etc. It worked ok for a while but then the NIT unit crapped out 4 months later. I thought it would be a warranty claim on his work but no, a totally unrelated issue with the NIT. Now it is operational. you may give him a call and see if he is interested in another 458 but mine was a problem child for several reasons.

    This is the result
