Of all the cars you have owned or driven, one sticks out as a favorite, maybe it is something you don't want to admit, but sometimes that guilty pleasure is not the most expensive. The Volvo p1800 is mine. I have a RHD '66, one of maybe 4-6 RHDs in the US. So a Koenigsegg builder has decided that he wanted to updated the classic Saint and I for one could not be more happy.

It is one of those cars you have to just love or you'll totally hate it. They are also world record holders in recorded milage with several over 1million miles and Irv Gordons well over 2million.

I think keeping the lines and external bumpers really makes it sex on wheels.

I've always loved the looks of the P1800, and this thing is a stunner.

My only criticism is that the laid-back headlights give it just a bit too much 'new T-bird' feel

Hope this doesn't push up the value of classic 1800s! I was hoping to get one next year

    Lost opportunity.

It just makes me think: Why didn't they make the Z3, Z4 and RX-8 beautiful. A real shame, why go to the trouble to make a sports car and not make it beautiful?

While the original P1800 is a incredibly gorgeous car, this is just too much retro. Like the "new" Thunderbird posted above. Far away from being a worthy successor.

What you call 'retro' is simply good design. Modern auto design has been 90% stale for decades. Very few cars with beautiful lines. Designers are trying to hard to be 'modern'. Whatever that means.

When I look at this car I see perfect proportions and line flow. Its not trying too hard. Its not trying to be different just to be different.

Lets look at the separate chrome bumper pieces...you would call those a retro touch when to me, they are simply good design. I am SO tired of these giant vast expanses of colored plastic covering the fronts of cars. It doesnt look good. Some brightwork is nice to break it up.

Don't understand me wrong, imho 90% of the really beautiful cars are decades old. I don't particulary like any modern car, with few exceptions (mostly Ferrari, that's why I'm here ;)). But both trying hard to be modern (BMW anyone?) and just copying the old design and trying to add some modern clues to it (@"new" P1800 -> the wheels. UGH!) don't work. I'd rather see the designers create something really new and elegant, something we still admire in 40 years.

(and btw, the car as pictured in the first post would be totally unacceptable today due to pedestrian safety regulations and stuff like that :D)

For those with no historic perspective, Volvo rally cars were so reliable and drivable, if they entered rallies, people would drop out. The P1800 is the choice of former McLaren F1 head Jo Ramirez to run in La Carrera Panamericana. A properly sorted rally p1800 can have a curbweight around 1900-2100lbs.

to the designer, Bo Zolland, of the company Vizual Tech.

    http://newsblogg.viztech.se/

Visit his website to see his other stunning designs; cars, hot rods, and especially some of his boat designs.......

Personally, I would kill for this '53 Studebaker concept.....

    Tritone
(PS; if you go all the way to the bottom of his blog, there is Ferrari content, thus its OK for FChat.....)
