Does anyone know where I can get a vintage Italian license plate set made? I've found some registration documents for my 365 and would like to have VE 415886 remade since I never got the plates with the car. This would be the late 70's style plate.

    Thanks,
    Erik

plates look ok, but seem to be front only, and said to be Aluminum whereas real ones are a plastic like substance.
Real plates are hard to get as they are supposed to be turned back to the ACI (issuer) when the car is removed from the road.

When I originally imported my first Ferrari from Italy to the UK I had to send the actual plates back.

However, the actual plates would not have been that difficult to copy as the lettering was white on black.

i had these German oval plates made up by licenceplates.tv with my current registration number and sent to me in Australia. size and finish is the same as the original plates that came with the car. another mate had some italian plates made for one of his cars.

sorry, not the best pic, but you will get the idea. i like them anyway.

I ordered a set of Prova plates from them. Excelent quality, steel plates, custom made to your order. They were much quicker than they said on the internet about it too. Highly recommended. No association, blah, blah.

I've not ordered any yet, but a couple of email questions resulted in their telling me that when I order, I should remind them to space the numbers and letters like their rear plate example, not like the "customize your own" plate results. I actually sent them a photo of an Italian plate to show them the proper spacing. I think with some diligence, they will do what is needed. They seem interested in doing them correctly.

In a similar style, some owners have made their own.
I was over at Kerry's house (owner of 330GT register) and admiring his Italian license plate when he chuckled. At first I didn't get it, then he explained to me how he had made it on his computer and printed it out then attached it to the correct period Italian license plate holder.

In the pic, plates are too shiny, lettering does not look right and the "RI" seal is missing, alto I am not sure if PROVA plates had it..most of the ones you see are so dirty and worn, it is hard to even read the plate

Real Italian plates need to be turned back to ACI (the Automobile Club) if the car is sold or scrapped and if you don't, they will hunt you forever and make you pay the yearly registration until you do, regardless if you still have the car or not.
I know that out of personal experience.
I had a look at the website though and the plates they show look remarkably real in all details.
The very early plates used to be metal (not aluminum though, because they used to rust....) but in the '60s they were replaced by the plastic ones as you see in the pictures of the website.

For computerized translations, you can use AltaVista:
    http://world.altavista.com/tr

Just copy and paste the URL into the appropriate box, select the language combinations (Italian to English in this case) and click on the Translate button. Not perfect by any regards, but usually good enough to get the sense of what you are reading (or at least knowing what a particular button might do).

Here you go. They shipped very quickly. The plate looks nice, it's metal and nicely painted. There are no holes drilled to mount. The big drawback is that the round "Republic Italia" stamping in the middle is just a bump with a sticker on it, it's not painted like the original. One good washing or a little rain and it's off. The back of the plate says "hand clean only, use soap and water or glass cleaner". This photo looks a little streaky, but that's just the scan, it's a nice solid black colour. This would be a really nice plate but for the sticker.

    Hope that helps.
