I am wanting to undertand the details on vintage Ferrari glass markings more completely and i would like to ask for help from the vintage experts. The following logo or similar ones appear on many vintage Ferrari and I would like to know - What do the letters VIS stand for? What does the string - Ag TP GS 21 stand for? IGM? 0590 ? VSP? AS1 would seem to indicate American Standard Safety Code version 1? M9? Thanks for any help on this. Craig Image Unavailable, Please Login
"IGM" = Inspettorato Generalle della Motorizzazione (english = Road Traffic Inspectorate. Kind of like a DOT) "AS1" = American Standard type/grade 1 (used for windshields mostly, although can be used anywhere else on the car. Specifies that it is tempered and laminated. Side windows will typically be "AS2"). "M9" = U.S. required model number of the window. Identifies the construction of the window, it's thickness, etc... Number is specific to the manufacturer, but will always have the "M" prefix. That's about all of the info I can provide.
Great Peter, thank you. This gives me a start. Are there any websites we can reference for this information? M9 format doesnt appear large enough to cover all the models that might occur within one auto manufacture in one year. Craig
Among some of the few (not so informative) windshield websites I've bookmarked over time, this one is the most comprehensive: http://www.carwindshields.info/windshieldmarkings.htm As you'll see, the "M" codes are specific to every manufacturer and even every one of their different models, so the M9 will be used only on the one Ferrari model (unless, of course, some successive models may use the same glass, like I'm sure the windows of a 308 GTS may be the same as the ones used on a 328 GTS [just an example of mine, I don't know if this is true...]). The links to the FMVSS & NHTSA can lead into page upon page of useless info, but this above site is enough to get the idea.
