On a recent drive I got pulled up in the Pantera for not having my front plate displayed 'correctly' and was threatened with a substantial fine and loss of points.

The discussion with the coppers also came around to 'another' car that they had seen that same day with a number plate sticker on the front and how this is totally illegal by the Vic Road Traffic Regs.

Pantera is a bit tricky. There is no place to mount a front plate where it will not impede visibility of a light, indicator or ruin airflow to the radiator.

I did some checking today and found this:

    Victorian Consolidated Regulations

    SECT 48
    Affixing number plate

    48. Affixing number plate

    (1) The registered operator of a vehicle must ensure each number plate issued
by the Corporation for the vehicle is permanently affixed to the vehicle so
that, when the vehicle is on level ground-

    (a) the number plate is at all times in an upright position parallel to
    the vehicle's axles; and

    (b) the number plate is at all times not more than 1×3 metres above ground
    level; and

    (c) for a motor cycle, the centre of the number plate is at all times at
least 30 centimetres above ground level; and

    (d) the number or letters, or both, on the number plate are clearly
visible from a distance of 20 metres from the number plate at any
point within the space produced by a horizontal arc of 90 degrees and
a vertical arc of 45 degrees, as indicated by the shaded areas in
    figures 5 and 6; and

    (e) any cover on the number plate-

    (i) is clear, clean, untinted and flat over its entire surface; and

(ii) has no reflective or other characteristics that would prevent the
successful operation of a device approved for use under a law relating
to the detection of traffic offences; and

    (f) for a motor vehicle other than a motor cycle, one number plate is
affixed to the front of the vehicle and another to its rear; and

    (g) for a motor cycle or trailer, the number plate is affixed to the rear
of the motor cycle or trailer.

    (2) The requirements in subregulations (1)(a) to (d) do not apply to a number
    plate for a vehicle if-

    (a) due to the construction of the vehicle it is not practicable to comply
    with the requirements; and

    (b) the number plate is affixed in a way that complies as far as
    practicable with the requirements.

    (3) If a vehicle is fitted with a bicycle carrier, the number plate required
under subregulation (1)(f) to be fitted to the rear of the vehicle may instead
be securely affixed to the bicycle carrier.

So this is a very interesting point of debate. Section 2 (a) above quite clearly states that due to the construction of the vehicle it is not practicable to comply with the requirements then the vehicle is exempt from having a front plate.

Well it's quite clear that the Pantera was never designed to run a front plate, but what about the 355? Did Ferrari fit a bracket from the factory to hold a front plate?

I'm going to VicRoads next to see if the specific vehicle requires an exemption, or will it suffice to carry a copy of the regs to show to the copper who pulls me up next.

That G8 Commodore getting around with the Pontiac front on it. Apparently that bumper was designed for USA and no plate provision was made into the bar. Holden have now got an exemption so that you don't need a front plate if you drive that car.

The way the coppers were discussing a certain red 355 with a sticker on the front wasnt good. They are clamping down on stickers, but if Holden can exempt a production car, then certainly we can exempt an exotic or two?

I understand where you are coming from, but telling a copper he's wrong by the side of the road may not play out well. Your best bet is to give them as few reasons to stop you as possible, IMO.

I'm told 25,000 Victorian drivers do not have a D/L and most are still driving.

the fines for driving without a D/L are a joke ie $100 and often 50 hours community service order.

Yep, my last traffic offence in 2003 was for no front plate. Cost me 3 points and $1000 in legal fees trying to fight it. No longer innocent till proven guilty.

NSW used to have a law that forbid photo's being taken from the front of the car for privacy reasons hence it wasn't an issue up there for quite some apparently due to a politician being photographed with someone in the car who wasn't supposed to be there. I used to hate all the civil libertarians but now I understand where they are coming from.

Of course in the nanny state of Victoria they need to take photos from all angles in order to maximise income streams. :) NSW which is financially ****ed have also learnt there is a quick and easy revenue stream. I see on ACA tomorrow night they are showing new cameras which not only pick you up for speeding but also can check rego sticker and a few other things. Where will it end. RIOT perhaps.

Slightly off topic, got the speedo in my car working today. The funny thing is is the needle is about 5 mph thick. Looking forward to trying to keep within 3 kph. ;) Fitting a concealed aftermarket cigarette lighter so I can mount my iPhone to use the GPS function to ensure I don't accidentaly exceed the limit by 3kph.

I don't worry about them, everywhere i drive I sit on the limit in the metro area, even on Freeways i sit on 80kph.
If i go by a camera on the side of the road,i brake hard just to give 'em the shjts.
I think i've worked out the system and now in a legal way play the game, next time i see you ask me or ask Morrettieeeoo how i do it.

Holden can do whatever they want.

The also had a fully registered C5 Corvette that was LHD with no front plate.

Agree, I quite often see GM/Holden LHD fully registered cars on Victorian plates heading to Lang Lang on the way to work on the Monash FWY. Why can they do it and yet you can't register a rare supercar.

Yeah, yeah, I know because they employ lots of people.

Okay, the big problem here is that when Halstead was the Detomaso importer all the Panteras that left the shop in Williams St had front plates.

As for the G8's every one I have seen has the front plate - I think someone is pulling your leg - development cars yes, special rego - regular cars still have to be caught by the camera.
