Consider the original Corvette, the 56-57 Lincoln MkII, and the 57-58 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, all were built at financial losses. Actually, it is the best form of in your face advertising.

my guess is the 5M is averaged out over the first years production. no way you can tool up for that car for 5M. also I can't believe they would do it to lose 4M per car. if they build the estimated 300 cars that would be a loss of 1.2B british pounds (not up on exchange rates but somewhere around $2B US)!

Reports suggest there is a regular bugatti planned for "the rest of us" and that the advertising they're getting from the Veyron is worth the losses. To me, that's the only way this car makes sense to VW...

    Also BTW...

for me for $1.25 Million given the choice of:

    Option 1: a Veyron

    or

    Option 2: An F40($350k) + Superamerica ($350k) + Daytona ($175) + 246 Dino ($100K) + 612 Scaglietti ($275)

I would certainly choose option 2. But....Almost certainly, anyone buying the veyron doesn't have to make "either/or" choices....

I cant find the exact amounts but I have read that Bugatti was tens of millions over budget on this car.. much more than 5 mil total.. The prob was that they started with an idea and model and had to build technology to meet the projected numbers.. thus the wait. There is a much better technical review in Road & Track where Gordan Murray (Mc F1) breaks down the engineering part. Unfortunately you have to read the mag to see it b/c R&T haven't posted the story online.

Here is a link to a bunch of pics:

Indeed tifosiron. What I cant wait for is the car that will oust the Veryon. Will it be the SSC Ultimate Aero, Enzo's predecessor, or the MF1. Do we not count the MF1 because it is not a reciprocating engine though? Cant wait to see what figures the 1500hp will put out :D.

We all know and it is very clear: Enzo failed in attempting to outperform a Mc Laren then Mc Laren finally has been outdone by BUGATTI so the conclusions is clear:
Veyron plays in the major leagues while Enzo & Carrera GT are boys' toys

Man I see another Enzo vs McLaren war. Enzo would kill a McLaren around a track and in the 1/4. One magazine had the Enzo 1/4 time at 11.1 and the McLaren at 11.3/4. I dont even think the McLaren breaks 1G on the skidpad.

I also read somewhere the Bugatti 1/4 times are estimates.

b-mak I know I definitely do. I am repeating what I have read on various sites, and magazines. Regarding the Enzo and the McLaren. The Enzo is much newer and more advanced, better brakes, more downforce, more power, quicker shift times, etc. It is almost like comparing the 288 to the McLaren. The McLaren is much newer and has obvious advances and advantages that would make it a better car around the track.

I am just defending a car that is most definitely not a "boys toy" and hits very hard in the major leagues.

... The Veyron is like an expensive toy, extremely fast, ridiculously powerful...
    Also extremely heavy.
It remembers me the Mercedes McLaren SLR, very very fast, full of luxury equipments, then you put it on a track and it's as fast as a Bentley Arnage.

Give me a choice between the Bugatti and any other exotic car... I'd take an Enzo, a Carrera GT, a Zonda F, a Maserati MC12! But NOT A VEYRON!

    Me neither.
F1 is still the (overall) king in my book. A supercar is not just 0-100 or top speed.
Plus, a USED F1 is MORE EXPENSIVE than a Veyron now (about $1.8 million in the last bid), that is saying something

Help me understand: A supercar is not just 0 - 100 or top speed.

but it's about their PRICE !!! now that makes a car great.

ever wonder what if they had built more than 75 McLaren ten years ago?

Why is the Saleen S7 never considered. Looks to me like a contender for the Veyron, Atleast the 1000hp model that they have.

Here's a comparison i found on the saleen website. Pretty interesting.
