I just started on a timing belt service on my new to me 2003 360 spider. I noticed some grime around the exhaust cam seal on the left (drivers side) cylinder head. I don’t see any fresh oil, but there is definitely a leak coming from somewhere. There is oil on the undertray just below the area as well as along the left side of the engine. I’m hoping it’s just the cam cover gasket leaking down from above, but the grime and oil around the cam seal has me worried. Both cam covers at the back of the engine are leaking as well, but the other front cam seals look fine.

None of the oil leaks are that severe, there is some spotting on the undertray, as well as the inside of the timing belt cover on that side, but no spots on the ground. I plan on changing the rear cam covers and probably the valve cover gaskets as well, but I’ve never done cam seals and that job has me a bit worried.

Any thoughts? Could this just be a valve cover gasket leak dripping onto the cam gear from above, or will I need to learn how to change a cam seal?

    thanks

I wish my engine was "clean" like yours is grimy. Looks just fine to me.
