You should know that is NOT the original speedo, so the mileage is not correct.

My 400i, which I bought from Dave, has a radar detector built in beneath the dash to the left of the wheel. I don't know what make it is (it has been painted black to make it more stealthy) or anything else about it, but it does beep and flash. I believe there is a rear-facing sensor in the rear screen.

    Adain,
I was never sure if it worked. I know it powered up and beeped when I got near microwave towers but I never came across a cop who had a radar unit out when i was driving.

btw, how is she doing? Told you you'd like her :)

The answer is...maybe. Who knows how many kilometers it was driven in europe before it was sent to the states. Most 400 series cars were not sent to the US new. Most of them were driven for a while in europe.
A 400 did not have to have a mph speedo in it to meet DOT standards. So it might have been put in years after it came to the US.
My 400i never had a mph speedo put in. Adain is driving it as we speak with the original kph speedo.

Original mileage on US 400 series cars is a wild guess at best.

My '84 400i has a MPH speedo, but the odometer clicks off kilometers.

Aaahhhh, the old "paste the mph" facing on the dial and leave the rest of the speedo as is, in km, trick!

Pretty common. A sticker has been placed over the face of the kph speedo.

For those of you interested I have a factory 400i mph speedo for sale.

Dave, I love her. A bit sluggish at low revs and kickdown not too good at the moment. Going in for valve service to Bill Pollard soon.

    Cheers

    Adain,
The modulator on the trans is adjustable. Take off the hose and insert a screwdriver (straight blade) and try turning it in 1/4 of a turn. See if that helps the kickdown.

Check the service records I gave you. If I'm not mistaken the valves were adjusted not too long ago. Or maybe Bill thought they were, not sure.
