I received the proper length of proper cloth-braided hose from GT Car Parts. This hose is what GT Car Parts has been selling for 15 years for the connection between the vacuum assist cannister in the front of the car and the intake manifold (with the one-way valve in-line near the manifold).

I spent all day yesterday trying to get the hose to slip over any of the fittings (cannister, one-way valve, intake manifold). I used silicone gel, heat, bolts to ream the hose, etc., etc., along with friends with long arms, scabs on the their knuckles, monosyllabic utterances, and tattoos that same something about "mama.."

I simply cannot slide this hose over these fittings. The hose has a wire skeleton that prevents expansion with heat (and is purported to prevent collapse under vacuum).

Has anyone used this hose with success? Any tricks up your sleeves? Help is greatly appreciated.

    Jim,

I bought the same stuff from GT (I live a few miles from them). It is the only tubing available to do the job.

I'm assuming that you are going from the vent plug on the block to the check valve?

I cut a section (maybe a little longer than what is really needed). I lubed the inside with vaseline (or any other type of lube). I worked sockets it on each side that would stretch the ID. Clamped them in so they would not slip out. (I used a vise to hold the socket as I pushed the tube over it). Let them sit overnight. Kind of repeated it a few times.

This did not make slipping them on a total piece of cake but helped substantially.

Pietro - thanks for the help.. Excellent idea of expanding the hose with ever increasing sockets, each held with clamps overnight.

However, I gave up and bought a different kind of hose. The stuff that GT Car Parts sells, is original looking, but I cannot believe that Antonio took this much time to install originally. Furthermore, in the future, should I have to replace it, I will be too old to go through this process. I won't remember where I left the sockets.

Isn't Vaseline a petroleum based product?
If so this can be bad for rubber/neoprene hoses. I'd suggest using a water based one or better yet soap and a little water.

Synchro - I went to a specialty hose shop yesterday to try and get my cloth-braided hose on the fittings. They sprayed WD-40 all over the hose and fitting. Did not help. They sprayed WD-40 over the alternative hose that I am now using.

Your admonition concerning petroleum based lubricant versus soap is appreciated, but I suspect that the manufacturers foresaw that these hoses would be used in petroleum-rich environments. Can it really be that harmful?

Apologies, obviously these are rated for petroleum based environments.

BTDT, although not on a Dino. I had a hose once I SWORE was the wrong size it was so tight. I got blisters, cuts etc. after an hour and it still wouldn't go on. Then I found a way to slide it on in 5 seconds. Boil it.

Your kitchen will smell a bit, and you must be sure the hose isn't resting on the side of the pot or it will melt, but 2 min. of boiling the end and it slid right on. I do not reccomend any lubricant except soapy water, (but I didn't even need that.) Any lube will encourage it to slide off, and as noted a petrolium based thing may not be friendly to your car.

Ken - I believe in heat. I use heat to accomplish most tasks. I heated the h.ll out of the hose, but it did not help. I usually heat hoses to slide on a tight fit, but the wire "cage" wound in the wall of the hose prevented heat-induced flexibility enhancement.

    Thanks for the idea.

Is there any way to cut the wire braiding just where it goes over the fitting?

If it didn't go on after boiling it, then maybe it IS the wrong size?

racerboy - unfortunately, that is not possible. It is impregnated (wound) within the wall of the hose.

Ken - I believe that it is the wrong size. It is what Dave and Bill sell at GT Car Parts - I trust them. They have been quite helpful over the years and if they say that this is the part (after several calls), then I believe them. However, they qualify their answer by saying that, "...this is the only part available..." Hence, it likely is not exactly the right part. Another millimeter diameter size would be welcome.
