Sometimes we forget that these things are only cars... Finished my yearly service on my 412 and just decided to use it as a daily driver for a while. Amazing how well these cars behave when you use them as intended. Get em hot every morning and again at night and suddenly all the switches work and the seals stop leaking and the window motors get faster. I guess they just like to play. A few more hours getting my 400i cooling system back together and that will be on the road too. SO many thumbs up and positive comments- seem these get better looking every year! I've been using my 400i 5-speed as a daily driver this past week just to get to know the car and see where it needs my attention. Man, I tell you, the amount of attention it gets is amazing....and my car is grigio! I have people walking up to me at the gas station. A school bus drivers pulls up beside me opens the door and starts asking me questions at an intersection. It's non-stop. I pull into a parking lot yesterday, and some dude walks up to me and says, "Is it a 400 or a 400i?" I say a 400i. Next thing you know he's talking about he used to work on 512BBs and that he'd take an injected BB over anything carbed, etc. How tuning the carbs is a PITA, etc..etc.. Then started talking about his Alfas and of course I have Alfas. 30 minutes later it was like..haha....you know those people? I do too, etc...etc.. It's just funny. Daily driving the 400i is rather fun I will say. It is a car purchased to be driven.
I do get a lot of attention- Not too many people know what it is at first glance- Of course once you open the hood they know! I think a 5 speed and an auto are the perfect pair! (and a 355 for weekends) Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yeah I think the GT4 is my favorite- Mine is just getting finished with the second part of its restoration- just about perfect now. Image Unavailable, Please Login
You're using the 412 exactly as I originally planned for my 400GT. Good work (so to speak). I'll take the trials, tribulations, and character of one of these older cars over the trials, tribulations, and torture of today's rolling computerized appliances (Honest, sir, the ECU shows no errors....). Just a while longer.........
Geez. I don't normally inhabit this forum, but this thread was created in the last day, so it showed up in my "threads updated" search. What a beautiful car the 400 is. I need one of those for a daily driver.
So many here are working on projects- sometimes it's easy to forget just how good these really are when completely sorted. I also have a great 560SEC and a great 928S4 and a great W140 S500 coupe- and there's no comparison- the 400 and 412 really outclass anything from the era. Nothing from the era can match the sound, and I thin the interior can hang with the Bentleys and Rollers form the era as well.
Excellent Jay, good going!! Man, your garage is really full And that's what makes these soooo unusual!! lol +1! Love the no ECU noise. Sorry, too much drama!
Stranglely I've ended up with a similar collection: 412GT, 355 Challenge, 308GT4 and a 308 GTB... My favourite is the 308 GTB, followed by the 412. M
Yikes, better put some miles on it before it breaks. LOL I'm paying the price for not working on my car over the winter. We've been having cloudless days with highs around 63 and my car is in the garage on jack stands with no rear suspension. Oh well, maybe some day I'll figure out that procrastination thing.
I have three big jobs going in my shop right now- 69 Camaro RS/SS got a new wiring harness and dash, 86 Slantnose Turbo got resprayed, now I have to reassemble it, and the 400i got a rebuilt radiator, hoses and hood pad- 90% reassembled. Always a bummer when the great weather comes and my favorite cars are on the lift.
