Hello, all. I'm new to Ferrari and FChat. I'm hoping to buy a 328 by this spring and I am looking at one locally in northern Illinois which needs some interior attention. The driver's seat leather has split in the seat pan. I don't know that it can be repaired because the split appears to run down the stitched seam. Anyway, I'd like to get an idea what a repair or reupholstery job would cost for the seat to figure that into the value of the car.

Do we have any recommendations in the Chicago area for a upholstery shops? If not, I can expand the search to a wider area and ship or drive the seats out to another area.

I would prefer a repair over replacement because the rest of the leather has seen and shows little wear (only 20K miles on the odometer). The pax seat is fine, too which would mean having mismatched leather in the case of replacement or reupholstery of the pax seat, too.

    Thanks,
    Lew

BTW, if anyone wants to come see this 328 with me out of curiosity and to have an experienced, second set of eyes on it let me know. That would be great!

Ogden Top and Trim in Berwyn. They do all Continentals work. They did complete new interior for 360. John and Carol are great folks. They've done many Pebble Beach Concours winners. One of the best anywhere.

Anything in the city? I was actually wondering this myself. Selling the TL soon, and have a rip on the drivers seat. Doubt it can be "patched" and would need the 8" x 12" (roughly) piece of gray perforated leather removed and stitched back in with a new piece.

I went back to see that 328, a black '89 on consignment at Ogden Motor Group. It's priced at about $49k, has nearly 27k miles on the ODO which seem appropriate for the cars condition. This car needs some attention so it will be out of my price range. I found the situation of this car to be a bit strange. They don't have it listed for sale anywhere I can find (again). It's not even on their website as inventory. About 3 weeks ago I stumbled upon what must have been an old link through the web for it. I found another listing at the time that made it appear the car was sold at auction. Today, I was told that the owner doesn't know where the service records are and/or they may have been destroyed in a fire. All that doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling so I will keep looking.

The upholstery shops will go in my Rolodex for future reference, though.

Here's an example of John's work from Ogden Trim. It's his car which competed this weekend for the famous Riddler Award. He made it to the final eight and we're waiting to see if he won today.

I had the seats for both of my Ferraris done at an industrial furniture upholstery place. They handstitched the 308 covers from the naked hides. And it didn't cost me terribly much. At the end of the day, a leather car seat is not much different from a leather seat in your house. Just has no legs. :)

Ogden Top and Trim seems a little overkill for the job I need done. Still looking.

Was just in Simon's detailing picking up some Dr. Beasley's stuff and they mentioned they had a guy that comes in to do leather repair. Quoted me $375 to unstitch the bottom 14" x 8" (roughly) panel, color match, and stitch in the new piece. Does the price sound fair? I think it's a little high, but I could also be dreaming. :)

I've got no practical experience with seats, yet. On it's face the price may seem high, but if you get a real good color match maybe not. Weigh that price against reupholstering a whole seat. You always gotta wonder if you get a "special price" for Ferrari work. In the end, if the quality of the work was very good with an excellent color match, I'd say it was worth it.

FWIW, I had a panel match like that done on a Ford at Rigg's Brothers in Naperville, and the price was about the same. I thought it was high when I got the quote, but they did an excellent job matching the material.

Yeah true on all accounts. Might have sold the car as is yesterday - sale pending. We'll see. If not, I'll probably get it fixed. $375 vs. the $1000-$1200 for a new skin from Acura. Decided not to go that route a long time ago, thought it would look strange - one brand new seat in a 10 year old car. The rest of the interior is immaculate, that said, it's still a 10 year old car. Anyhoo.

Also FWIW, the Dr. Beasley's products did wonders. Used to use Leatherique products, but somehow misplaced the stuff when moving a year ago. Seats are now nice and supple without feeling greasy.
