underbody coating

    whilst jacking up my car and using axle stands, I`ve damaged some of the original underbody coating.My question is where can I get some as close to the original as possible.mine is a kind bitumen coating in a plum colour,its definately original as it has even been sprayed behind access panels that have never been removed.from my searches I could only find Wurths Stone Guard but I believe this is in black.

    Wurth's stone guard is not for the undercoating, its for the black panels below the doors. The undercoating from the factory is Dynol (sp?). I don't think its available, but someone like Rifledriver might have more info.

    I got a couple of the Wurth high build spays from Amazon.com worked out great

    The original stuff is (Brown) Dinitrol 4942 and its available - I have just been using some today :)

    Undercoat is better known for holding moisture IN than it is for keeping moisture out...

    I would be more inclined to remove it than to add to it.

    Well, that would be a bear of a job (!) . I have my engine out at the moment & just today I have been replacing the firewall insulation & re-undersealing the chassis tubes in the engine bay. Given the condition its all in I would say the stuff works pretty well to be honest.

    I think Iain is right about it being Dinotrol, not the matte or eggshell black trim paint.

    OP said it was plum color which is what the Dinotrol looks like.

    I believe the Dinotrol is part of the rust protection so be careful about what you remove and what you use to re-cote it.

    I think the Dinotrol or an equivalent would the correct product to use in that area (wheel wells and other inner exterior panels). However, it does seem to be nasty stuff and for that reason, I used the Wurth product when I refinished that area.

    I think Rifledriver could give you a definitive answer as he had in period experience with the factory's application of Dinotrol.

    Has anyone removed the gooee stuff. I thought it might be a good winter project to remove it -but are you guys suggesting it is best to leave it on?. It seems like tar to me ? and I would love to see nice metal>

    Any advise appreciated

    I wouldn't even contemplate attempting it. I think the only way to get rid of it would be to strip the car down to a bare shell & have it dipped/stripped - either that or sandblasted.

    My car is 20+ years old & I know that it had Dinitrol re-applied just before I bought it 11 years ago (its actually in the service schedule I think). The Dinitrol is still pliable so I think it does its job well. I have just re-applied it (by hand with a brush) all round the chassis legs:
