No, I'm not talking about the side mirrors, the center rear view mirror on the windshield of my QV has gotten loose and keeps drooping down, and I don't see a way to tighten it. Is there any trick to getting that mirror to stay up where it belongs?!?

The mirror pops off from the base that is glued to the windshield. You can tug it off or use a thin screw driver to pry it off. It just has a ball socket that it snaps into. Once you have it off you should be able to see how to tighten it up.

I had a slightly different problem and a different solution. My daughter accidentally knocked off the rear view mirror and I went to the local parts store to get some glue to reattach it. To make a long story short, after trying to re-glue the critter I found a new mirror that although not the original "Vitaloni" type is almost exactly same size mirror- 8" wide- as the original, and looks virtually identical from the cockpit side. It does, however has a different mounting system- it has 2 spring-loaded pivot balls instead of one, which makes it considerably more adjustable than the original. This is important to me as the original mirror is mounted too low for me- I'm a tell driver- and cannot be mounted higher, due to its design... however the one I found at Autozone, which after mounting, can be adjusted another 1/2" higher, until it touches the bottom of the windscreen surround, if you wish. That gives me better visibility below the mirror, thru the windscreen.

I also had trouble getting the glue to work (the mirror kept popping off!), until I took it to a glass shop to install. They use the same type of glue, but slightly heat the small metal base you glue to the windscreen before gluing it on- worked fine! Yes, the mirror isn't original but as the part of the windscreen it's glued to is darkened (on the 328 anyway) you can't really see much of the mount that's behind the mirror on the new one, which cost me some $15 + glue. The original mirrors-should you need one, and won't consider a different style-are very, very expensive. Not better, just expensive. That's Ferrari. I saved the mirror, though.

    Cheers,
    Rich

Mine pops off every time I bump it. Usually when I'm working on something in the cockpit.

    Rich,

Do you have a link to the mirror?

    Cheers,

Mine's currently ripped off, and has been for a couple years now. "First rule of Italian driving" etc etc. I have a replacement sitting on a shelf but never bothered to glue it on.

I don't know about the gtb/s's but on my gt4 there is actually a double sided tape. It is identical shape on the Porsche 914's. I replaced this 15 years ago no problems still. It cost $12 from a local Porsche parts shop.

I posted some pics up last year showing where a metal spring inside the mirror needs to get popped to the other side of the mechanism. Pop it off and open it up and you'll see it.

So is my issue a weak spring? I thought that maybe the socket (as in the ball and socket) had gotten worn and the ball no longer fit tightly. It is still attached, but it won't stay where I want it positioned, it just hangs impotently.

I saw it as a kid in the theater. That is the movie that made me love Ferraris (and hate Cobras). I rented it last month off Amazon. A bit more campy than I remember but still funny as hell.

More than you wanted to know about your rearview mirror, including discussion of its floppiness (mostly on the second page):

No. but the mirror I used is carried by most of the auto parts stores, including Autozone, but others as well. 8" wide, 2 pivot points (ball sockets) and the small glue-on plate you glue on first, then fit the mirror to. If you put one of these on don't forget to leave a bit of space above the glue-on metal piece to be able to slide the mirror on & off. It's fixed in place with a small setscrew. And as I said, costs $15 plus the glue.

    Cheers,
    Rich
