I have a cigarette trickle charger that I use on a lot of my cars. When I try and use it on my 430 I hear a repeating "clicking" sound from under the dash...something like a relay/solenoid clicking over and over. It also turns the radio on for me... even without the key in.

Do you have any idea what is going on? Can I use the trickle charger or am I hurting something?

I know the answer is to drive the car more often...but I have a lot of cars and it gets hard in the midwest once winter hits.

    Thanks
    Chuck

I have seen this before. Radio coming on, interior lights coming on ect...... Not when working on Ferrari's, but other cars. It all works the same way. The cigarette lighter must be feeding power back through it. The clicking sound is probably a relay clicking away under there that is also getting a backfeed of power from the trickle charger . The radio coming on is strange also. Must be getting power from the trickle charger also. Maybe you should not use it and use a normal trickle charger connected to the battery. Im not sure if an other F430 owners that use a cig lighter charger suffer the same issue here. We never looked into a fix for the problem, as it was easier to reccomend the owners to use a 'normal' trickle charger. It will probably eventually burn that relay/s out as the relay/s will warm up forever clicking away like that. Also, the radio? Save this charger for your other cars mate. This F430 needs battery trickle charger attached. :)

Why not just use the battery disconnect switch? Worked fine for me when I temporarly stored my 360 and now 430.

Or you could just do that also. ;)

From 360CS on you can't use a trickle charger via the lighter socket. Best to either spec it with the pre-wiring or hook up direct to the battery. Blew a few fuses when I tried this on my CS - having bought a trickle charger from the Ferrari parts department.

    Steve do you know why?

Is the lighter usable without the key in pos 1? If so, I would think it sould work unless there is some grounding problem.

The current to the lighter in the 360 is always on regardless of key position. I do not know if that's the same for the 430.

However, if you are hearing a clicking sound, I would not continue using the charger there. Apparently there is a relay it is affecting and you don't want to take the chance of arcing across a relay that could cause a fire!

If you do not have the factory charger, have an Interstate connected to your battery or to the terminals behind the driver's seat under the panel.

Don't use it. I used it on my F430 and it drained the whole battery. Luckily it didn't do any damage to the car. I just recharged the battery and it's fine now.
