It is more logic than math. Because the number of cats and rats are equal in both examples, the time will not vary. The "and a half" is only there to throw you off. If you change the initial values to one cat and one rat, or two cats and two rats, etc., the answer is always a day and a half, or whatever amount of time is specified for equal numbers of cats to consume equal numbers of rats. The time will only vary if the ratio of cats to rats is changed. This one confounded the hell out of me when my Dad first explained it to me when I was about six years old.
