Which rally is more fun and why? Time to start planning this and could use the advice of members who have participated in these events. This will definitely be a bucket list adventure.

Check out the driving schedule: Targa is much more leisurely - heard tales of 20 hour days on the Mille Miglia - echoes comments on your other thread

Having done the tributes a few times, I agree with Jimmie and would add the following:

Targa Florio: A large Italian participation, quite convivial, and the evening entertainment are elaborate affairs over which I have made some very good friends. The roads are quite variable and in the mountains after heavy rain which we had in 2015, became a little "off road" adventure. Can be difficult in a low slung car. Can be done as a solo driver event.

MM: due to the long days, the evenings are quite short, with fewer opportunities to meet other participants who tend to be a more international crowd. The organisation of the event is generally excellent as are the roads. Quite hard to do solo.

Either way, a lot of fun.

We have done the Mille miglia for the last 6 years ranging from full support and running own cars, days can be long but we always seem to return every year. This would be my choice

    i have done both.

    they are somewhat different.

the targa is a part of the giro di sicilia, so you start in palermo and do a counter clockwise tour of the island over 5-6 days, and then you do the original targa run and a visit to the museum etc, and then it concludes back in palermo. it has the usual timed sequences, dinners, village visits etc, but is far more relaxed and enjoyable, and not really competitive.

the mm is a mission. you have set points to hit, crazy drives over public roads, nice dinners and lunches, time on track, and then the awards ceremonies. all very posh, very organized, and very competitive.

the targa event is not as expensive, but after you add up the cost it takes you to get you and your car there, it might be the same.

agreed, and not only impossible to do solo, but unadvisable - you just cannot do it alone, BUT you better have confidence in your co-driver coz its hard and mistakes are not a good thing.

1000 Miglia Tribute is VERY expensive (even if the cost disappears if you have to send your car here and back from oversea), but the 1ooo Miglia is the world top driving event.

Very demanding: it's a precision race and not a touristic tour, don't forget about that. At the end you will be very tired and you will just like a bed to sleep, but you will be very happy too.

This said, I would start with the Targa Florio.

    ciao

agreed. i did the targa/giro first, and that prepped me and my father for what these rallies are like, what is expected, how the car needs to be prepped etc etc.

then when we got to the mm we were in a better position to enjoy the process since we were not as confused or clueless.

the targa/giro is not that well organized - its sicilian after all !, but this allows for some leeway on you as a participant.
the mm is VERY well organized, but requires you to strictly adhere to the rules, the timed arrivals etc etc. and if you are unsure of how the whole thing works you will make mistakes, be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and spend a lot of time and effort and worry on getting it right instead of enjoying the event.

i did both of these when i still lived in Geneva full time, so i just drove to the event. if you are transporting a car from wherever, then you need help from people and companies that are experienced in the matter. OR, you buy/rent a car that gets you into the event and do it that way.

btw, you must plan all this at least 1 year in advance.

(ps, and if it was me - which i hope to be the case again sometime soon - i would start by having a detailed discussion with craig who posted above.)

This is really helpful, I appreciate all the comments. For over ten years I've dreamt of driving in the MM but it's becoming more clear that I should start out with the Targa Florio. For me it's really about experiencing Italy in a Ferrari and hopefully making some new friends along the way. The MM I'm sure is an experience of a lifetime that hopefully I will try but it sounds quite a bit more demanding. It sounds like some of the roads on the Targa Florio are in rough shape? I should probably be ok in a 458 Spider ? Good clearance. Can anyone recommend a good company to transfer a car from the US to Italy?

A 458 and should cope just fine with the surfaces. A spider is a good choice as the views are stunning, when you can take the eyes off the road to appreciate them. I will be doing the next one in October, so feel free to PM if you have any questions re arrangements.

Yes, the roads can be rough, but at least you get a police escort!

Do you & other UK participants typically drive to the ferry & back or is there something like shared transport ? TIA

I use Menabue/Menabetz who often do a special run to these events using 6-car transporters. Their on-site organisation at the other end is good. Driving to Italy is always fun but I avoid it for these events as there plenty of long driving days ahead.

I used them once, no issues.

A lot of Bay Area collectors use them for getting their vintage cars to the MM in Italy.

They are very well respected, but expensive.
