I'll be staying in the heart of downtown Florence in an upcoming trip to Italy. I have a factory tour scheduled at 10:00 AM one day and have to get from Florence to Maranello that morning. I was thinking of renting a car for the day since we have private tours set up several other days and don't need a car downtown. Can someone tell me how easy it is to get out of Florence and get to the factory? Would I be better off taking a taxi to the airport and renting a car from there?

I just don't want to be late or miss it. Any input or better method to get there is appreciated.

Take a taxi to the train station, European train service is very frequent and reliable, sometimes faster than a car.

I vacationed in Florence some years ago. 16 days. I took trains everywhere. There are so many trains coming in and out of Florence it would be hard to believe your needs can't be met. The train depot in Florence is in the historic center of town, so that would be convenient for you. Take a train to Maranello and if the factory is too far from the depot to make it on foot, take a taxi.

It is my understanding that the train does not go to Maranello and you have to go to modena and then get transportation from there. I have no problem with a train but it is 25 minutes by taxi after I find one. Are taxis readily available at the factory? Isn't a car easier?

As soon as you get to Florence go to the train station to check the schedule tables that are posted everywhere at the station. Florence is a big tourist destination so help should be easy to get if desired, get a first class ticket and a reserved seat if possible. Unless there is service direct to the factory, it appears you can take a taxi from Modena. The train is easier than you might think. I've trained in and out of Florence many times but have not done your exact journey so I defer to anyone else with exact experience.

Whatever you do make sure you don't drive in Florence ,it's a maze of bus lanes and poorly signed zones your not supposed to drive in. You'll be paying fines til domesday.

That's what I have heard and why I was wondering if I should go to the airport to get the car.

In lots of countries in Europe, trains are much easier, and sometimes faster when you consider time from point of departure to point of destination, that is city center to city center, and besides less stressfull than any airplane and airport, to which you have to go first.
Usually we europeans do consider that if a train can bring you from one city center to the other city center in less than three hours and a half, it is better to take the train.
Above three hours and a half, plane might be interesting (not always).

It will take you two hours and five minutes from the center of Firenze (Florence) to Maranello/Fiorano by high speed train. And you won't have to leave Florence early, due to heavy traffic, to be sure to catch your flight...

Whether you take the train to Modena and then a taxi to Maranello, or rent a car, you are going to be rushed to make that 10 AM start time. I think you would be better off leaving the day before and staying at a hotel like the Planet.

I drove from Maranello to Florence in 2012. Rent a car; much easier to do it on your terms, plus there are areas to see around Maranello. It's only about a 1.5 hour drive.

A couple years ago we used a hotel close to the Ponte Vecchio as our base for exploring Siena and other points south; we also drove to Maranello for a factory tour. I believe the hotel took care of registering our rental car with the police to avoid ZTL fines:

Driving in and out of town was easy, you simply had to watch out for scooters. The Autostrade are great. I found driving in Florence preferable to driving on the DC beltway. I like having the flexibility of having my own car and am willing to put up with the associated costs and hassles.
