I recently aquired a used Borla exhaust system for my TR. This system has four individual pipes off each header...each through it's own muffler....and out four tail pipes. This is quite a complex system and I can understand why Borla discontinued it....all the work to build it and not a big market for it. The mufflers will polish up real nice...as will the exhaust tips. But the inferior grade of stainless tubing has me stumped. Should I try and polish it, get it jet-hot coated....what? Thank You in advance for your help and opinions. I'll try and show a picture.

    Great question.

I have often wondered whether you can coat a used exhaust system and get a nice looking package for significantly less money than a new unit.

Please keep us informed on your progress.

The Borla claims to use 304 stainless which is a good quality stainless. It should polish up nicely, but it will discolor again over time. You can get it ceramic coated by HPC of Jet Hot (I would recommend HPC) and it should look great, as long as you like the available colors.

Sound is subjective, and I've heard some peolpe say they love it and others say they hate it.

Speaking of exhauts, I've just replaced my exhaust system. Gone are the precats, factory cats and massively heavy muffler. In its place is a true dual exhaust. It's amazing how much space there is back there now without the muffler! I'm using two 3" high flow cats that feature built in resonaters these then feed directly into Ansa Silver line tips. I've not weighed all the old exhaust components, but estimate weight around 70-80 pounds. The new system weighs just 20 pounds, including the resontated chromed tips! The Ferrari sounds amazing! If you've heard the Tubi or Capristo exhausts on other V12 cars (e.g., Murcielago) then you know how good a free breathing 12 cyl can sound! Drove the TR to the Long Beach Grand Prix and the Ferrari caught everyone's attention driving down the main drag as it sounded better than most of the race cars! I'm having a second made to copy system if anyone's interested! Cost from headers to tips is about $950 and includes cats so you can still pass emissions.

Hi. I've got a 550 and I like the semblance of a quiet exhaust on the open roads of Wyoming. I think Tubis sound brittle and harsh, I wont spend 15K on Kreissings and I can't find Cargraphics dealers anywhere.
Borla doesn't have anything manufactired and they don't return sales calls.
What do you think of Borla, price, quality, fit, finish and sound AND PERFORMANCE (really, the only reason I'll buy them)
In the meantime, I'm thinking of wiring the vacuum valve open on the stock units and see what they sound and feel like. Any of you know how that affects the system? Thanks John

It should both reduce the low end torque and make it quite loud.

I'll try posting some pics in a day or two. Pretty neat actually. For the real creative types, there's room for a 328/308 style trunk where the old giant muffler used to be!
