I'm currently looking at a 1987 Porsche 944 for sale in New Hampshire. I talked to the owner over the phone today and asked if the car has a title with it. He siad no, but one was not needed. He told me when he bought the car last year the previous owner didn't have one but because it was over 10 years old it wasn't needed in NH. He said he registered the car by bringing the bill of sale to the dmv, and when he asked to apply for a title he was told not to bother that he wouldn't need it. I'm not sure about this law in NH, but it Ct every vehicle made after 1980 has to have a title to be registered. I told this to the owner and he said he'd call the dmv to find out about getting one to sell the vehicle out of state, and then get back to me. Does anyone know if this is actually the law in NH, and if it is can you get a title to sell out of state, or will I never hear from this man again? Thanks.

The NH DMV has a good website, should be easy to find under nh dmv .gov or close to that.

My son ran into this NH law about 5 or 6 years ago, at that time, any vehicle 10 yrs or older could be sold in NH w/o a title. He'd sold a car on time & was holding the MA title until he was paid & the 'buyer' sold the car in NH!!!

About the same time I bought a 12 year old motorcycle & all I received from NH was a statement of prior NH registration, which the MA registry accepted as a title. However, the Yamaha dealer told me that NH had gone to requiring titles on all new vehicles & was phasing out the no title thing in such a way that cars old enough to have not gotten titles could still be sold. Think it was a 1 for 1 increase in the exempt age each year.

I don't know when the title cut-in year was, but '87 has got to be pretty close to the boundary.

Try the nh.gov web site for current info tho.

Thanks Verell, thats good to hear the law does exist. I went to the NH dmv site but couldn't find anything about the ten+ years title exempt laws. And I'm very hesistant to buy the car, bring it back to Connecticut and then find out I can't register it. I'll try the site again, and hope that he calls me back with a title for the vehicle.

fwiw, my understanding (and don't go trading stock on this) is that he CAN get a title - it just might not be REQUIRED. the process to get a title in NH on a vehicle without one is apparently non-trivial. i remember a buddy of mine having to do it in order to donate his old jalopy to charity. i think in the end he found another charity (after a long search) who'd take it as-is - he wasn't willing to spend the time jumping through hoops for a charitable donation.

Yes, that's exactly what he told me. He said when he went to register the car he asked to apply for a title but the DMV told him not to bother that he wouldn't need one for anything. I just thought that sounded odd that he wouldn't need a title for a vehicle that "new". That's nice to hear though that he should be able to get a tilte for the car, if it is indeed an easy process.

Both my Porsche 928 & then Ferrari 328 were older than the 10 years & even though I had the PA & MO title I could not get one in NH. It's really no big deal. When I sold my 928 to a guy in PA I just had to fill our some extra papers so he could get it titled there.

Interesting thread. When I went to register my '66 330 in RI the responded that I didn't need a title either because the car was over 25 years old. They looked at the previous owners title and gave it back to me saying it was of no consequence. I am keeping ALL the paperwork with this car so resale , if it comes, should be no problem.

I'd be fine buying the car with no title if i can register and drive it in Ct, otherwise there's no point of buying a car if i can't drive it. However I would like to have a title with it.

If I'm not mistaken, NH will issue a title if you request it based on the registration document. If you buy the car in NH, you should be able to take the old registration to CT dmv and they'll either tell you get a title or push it through with bos and registration. Either way, I don't remember it being a particularly painful process - couple of forms to dmv should do it - old registration and bill of sale I think gets the job done.

Is this true even though Ct laws state that any car newer than 1980 must have a title to be registered?
