wondering if anyone has thought and implemented some way of cleaning or at least reducing the dirt on tires before you enter the garage. We're planning on a very clean space to store cars, and was wondering if anything like a pattern grate has any effect.

    and yes I am ocd.

I guess putting on new ones each time would be too costly?

Get some people wearing thick wooly clothing to lay down and slowly drive over them...if the tyres are still dirty..just reverse.

Jack it up, take them off and clean them. Put them back on and roll the car in on dollies.

If you don't use the cars in the wet, you won't track much first in.

You are essentially seeking a solution similar to farm bio-security station for vehicles. This is accomplished by drive through wheel dipping. I doubt it would work as you would want, as instead of tracking in dirt, you would track in water unless you had a drying pad or station beyond the wheel dipper.

Get some cheap indoor / outdoor carpet and drive on it before entering the garage. Berber loop carpet should help remove the loose dirt before entry.

Truly the anal side of me..I hate cleaning the crud off floor as well..
I do not drive in the soggyist of conditions...however dirt/mud in general sticks more to dry tires than moisturized tires..
IMO....A dry tire is more absorbant..a moisturized tire is more reflective of_________
I remove my wheels and paint brush a rubber protectant moisturizer every 2 months..Keeps the tires Real deep in black and I feel cuts down on general dirt sticking to rubber..certainly it wipes off easier..I am not talking about winter driving where salts and sands are present..

My tires are always Black...but not shiny..

Next Up...Botox injections on my seat cushions!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On reflection, I have to retract what I wrote earlier. I do avoid driving in the wet and so rarely bring a wet car into the garage, but our driveways are grass. So if the grass is wet, I do track some leaves and a little mud in. However, we have plain white tile floors in the garage, so cleaning up is very easy, so easy I’d forgotten I do track some dirt in.

What I am saying is that with the right floor you can keep a very clean appearance in the garage. I have never felt the need for a tread cleaning device.

I think Teej needs clean floors because he photographs cars. Wonderful photographs by the way, Teej.

Andres - thanks for the comments. No this isn't for the studio. It's for home. Your photo with the grass and Chris' comments about outdoor carpet is actually something I was thinking about. It's too dry here to keep grass green and it's a single entry door so real grass would get trashed easily. I'm sure the carpet would wear out as well, I was hoping to find stiff bristled mats that I can lay inset to the driveway concrete. Inside the surface is going to be very clean and stark.

We haven't started demo yet so lots of time to figure it out. I have a list of "how am I going to solve for..." types of issues.

    Thanks for the constructive ideas.

This seemed like an odd question but then I got to thinking this may be an issue I may face with my next house
I like the artificial grass idea as it easily replaced and retains its colour and comes in sorts of grades.
another idea I have seen is plastic tile matts that let the grass grow through but keep from wearing tracks in the grass...

To be clear, a grass driveway will not keep a garage floor clean; the reverse is true. I mentioned it only because I think the answer is to have a floor that is easy to clean and keep looking clean. You will always track dirt in.

We have another garage for daily drivers. That has a paved area before it and an epoxy floor. The floor looks very clean, too. Again, I think the answer is to have a smooth, light colour floor.

On the subject, the advantage of grass is that it doesn’t radiate heat like a concrete or paved driveway. It also adds a nice feel that artificial grass or carpet won’t provide. The plastic tile that allows grass to go through is a good idea, I think. We have grass pavers on the driveway - blocks with holes for grass to grow in. In most areas, grass covers the blocks completely, as seen here.
