Hi Guys, My 599 makes a rubbing sound anytime the car is not pointed straight. I have turned the wheel max left and right and can find no evidence of the tire hitting the inside of the fender. Before I take it to the dealer, does anyone have the same experience or know what could be going on? Thanks! Woody
maybe inner shield came loose? take the wheel off and it should be obvious where it is rubbing. I assume stock wheel/tires?
mine does that too. its normal. its just an alignment/wheel size issue. the suspension geometry is not designed for tight turns but optimized for handling. i have other 'sporty' cars that do the same thing. race cars do it too. the tire actually scrubs the ground when turned too much. not enough caster....check the wear on the tires but most likely thats all it is... i would say it makes that rubbing noise when the steering wheel is at least 1/2-3/4 turned so the speed is always low, correct?
Yes, that is exactly correct. Maybe it is the nature of the beast. I feel better about it already. Thank you for your comments.
That "rubbing" sound is the gearbox.. the oil needs to be changed to a new oil from Shell that is only available from the factory. The oil you currently have in your gearbox is causing the diff to "chatter". Take your car in and tell them that you need to have the gearbox oil changed for this issue.. it's a well documented issue with FNA.
Dealer said my VIN did not fall in the recall for the gear box oil. Something is not right, it's to excessive to be normal. I am taking the car tomorrow to try and get to the bottom of it. Thanks for all your comments. Woody
mine makes that noise and does not fall into the gearbox oil recall either. my mechanic assured me its just the tires/alignment issue we previously discussed. but check it out anyway, you never know.
NO WAY they would sell a car/Ferrari that scrubs the tyres out on the wheel arches when you turn the wheels and tell you that it is a normal alignment/wheel size issue! I have never heard of this before in my life and I have driven MANY MANY makes and models of cars over the years. My 348 also doesnt do this. Must be more to it and I think rberg32 is on the right track.
I will GUARANTEE that it is the gearbox oil, regardless of what your tech says about your VIN. When I was dealing with this on my car, I can't tell you the amount of frustration I dealt with trying to troubleshoot this problem. Nothing like taking friends for a ride in your 375k car and the frekin thing groans and grinds like the wheels are about the fall off when you are only going 5mph in the parking lot. Like you, I was almost certain it had to do with the tires/alignment, etc. I actually got in the shop and worked side by side with the tech on my car as I was completely obsessed with finding out what was causing this. We even went as far as mounting microphones, vibration sensors and video equipment all over the car to determine what this was. Bottom line, all sound/vibration sources lead to the gearbox. Only after we reported these findings did the factory finally admitted there had been several reports of this and said they were in the process of developing a special oil from Shell that would remedy this issue.. I waited 2 months for the oil to be developed and shipped from Italy. The tech followed the procedure to remove all old gearbox oil and replaced with the new oil and the problem was fixed immediately. So, regardless of what you tech is saying about your VIN, you need to demand that they replace your oil. Don't for a minute buy into anyone saying this is normal.. it is NOT!
Well I took my car to my dealer for evaluation. They were very attentive as usual. The Tech road with me and confirmed the noise was most likely from the Gear Box, but my VIN did not fall in the range to be replaced. It does not make it right, but we took out another 599 and it made the same identical sounds. I was told it was the nature of the beast, but he would look into the possiblity of Ferrari approving replacing the oil in the gear Box. I sent them a copy of the post from "rberg32" and his results. I hope this will strengthen my case. Thanks very much for all your comments, Especially Rberg32, Hell of a job!
In summary, the tires had nothing to do with the noise, it was the Gearbox as suggested by other contributors to the tread. It came to a head when I cut and pasted the post by "rberg32" regarding his investigation of the same problem. After doing so the dealer called immediately to inform me they had forwarded the e-mail to FNA and learned there was an additive available that would eliminate the noise. They picked up my car, changed the gearbox oil and put in the additive all under warranty. This made a significant improvement by my estimate of about 75-80%. To a point I am comfortable with it and very pleased. My thanks go out to rberg32 for his incredible determination and Foreign Cars Italia for their continued excellent service!
Woody, it may take 100 miles or so for the new gearbox oil to fully work its way past any remnants of the old gear oil. Drive her some and she may start getting even better after 100 miles.
I would be pretty psd if i had spent that amount of money on a car and had that issue. Just goes to show what Ferrari dont know or dont tell.....
LOL! Just wait, kid. You'll get your first plane and then get a little postcard in the mail from the U.S. government...an "AD" for which you must comply at your cost. A "fix" to your airplane even though nothing is wrong with it. Makes the car shenanigans trivial.
