Just got pulled over tonight for my tint! Trust me when I say I have had my fair share of getting pulled over for speeding and when that happens my tint never gets mentioned by the officer. This makes twice in two years I have been pulled over strictly for my tint in Ashburn. Virginia legal tint limit is 35% in the rear and 50% up front. Well I have 35% front and rear (more uniform look). Its such a PITA! I could understand if I was speeding and got pulled over and got a ticket for tint at the same time but getting pulled over JUST for my tint sucks. My last car I drove around for two years with 20% and never got pulled over for tint and 20% is DARK!

WTH Robbie, give me a waiver of some sort lol!! I think Im going to make an appointment with an eye doctor for prescription to allow me to have dark tint.

I understand the reasoning behind having tint limitations but in all honesty 35% is not that dark. Try going down south where they are allowed to have 5-15% tint.

Sorry for that rant, I just LOVE having to fork over $150 in a tint fine.

Here in MD, we usually just give a equipment repair order for dark tint. Basically means you have to go by MVA and have it inspected by them. If it is too dark, they make you remove it. If it is OK, they give you a sticker to place on the window saying it passed. Although there is a citation and fine for it --nobody usually writes it..

    Love Ashburn.

I was pulled over for no front plate in Ashburn and then the Deputy starts telling me how he can write me a ticket with points for no front plate (which is total bs). I was more upset that the guy was lying to me then pulling me over. He did not write a ticket though.

He tried telling you it was a moving violation for no front plates???? hahahah. The worst part of Ashburn is Ashburn Village. I think this is the same cop that gave me a tint ticket about a year and half ago on the same road lol. I take Ashburn Village rd to get to my gym but I guess I will be rolling down my front windows for now or taking a different PITA route. :(

Robbie - If I have my front windows down when driving around and since my rear windows are legal, can an officer pull me over and tell me to roll my windows up so he can inspect them? I thought I have to have better cause to pull someone over? Since my windows are down and back windows are legal they technically would have no reason to pull me over I think.

Been there, done that, paid the fine. Fairfax cop pulled me over a long time ago.. had my windows down, not speeding. He made me roll my windows up so he could put the meter on them. Barely past the legal limit but I still had to pay the ticket. He told me he got bored of writing speeding tickets all morning and wanted something different to write up. I hate Fairfax County... I have dozens of stories about the cops there. Not much 'real' crime going on I guess, so they have to pass the time somehow.

In MD 35% is the legal limit for tint. Years ago when I had a modified Honda Del Sol, I got pulled over at 1am while idiling at a stop light. He gave me a ticket for an illegal exhaust, and illegal tint. I had the 35% tint on the car to avoid this. The worst part of all was my windows were 3/4 of the way down, and it was night.

So I took the car to the MVA to prove my tint was legal with the light meeter. And it fails. Why? Because Honda tints their windows 2% from the factory. That is some BS...

In Michigan there are no restrictions for tinting the rear windows, but in the front you can only legally tint the top 4 inches of the windows. It's a completely assinine law that ammounts to a money grab for the local law enforcement. These tickets are normally only written as a second offense ie you get pulled over for speeding and you get the ticket for the tint too. A neighbor has a blk/blk/blk 2006 C6 Convertible and has 15% on all the windows...looks evil, but he says that he has been hassled by the cops ever since he had it done and is thinking about going into the 15% replaced with something a little more transparent.

What makes the law bias is that SUV's and Pickups have there own set of rules that differ from cars. It’s an outdated law that has to be updated.

    Maryland Window Tint Law
    Maryland Tint Law Enacted: 1995
HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN MARYLAND?

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Maryland, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 5 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows Must allow more than 35% of light in.
Back Side Windows Must allow more than 35% of light in.
Rear Window Must allow more than 35% of light in.

HOW REFLECTIVE CAN THE TINT BE IN MARYLAND?

Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting film contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.

Front Side Windows No reference to reflectivity in the current law.
Back Side Windows No reference to reflectivity in the current law.

    OTHER MARYLAND RULES AND REGULATIONS

Restricted Colors The tint color(s) of RED are not legal by state law.
Side Mirrors Dual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted.
Certificate Requirements Manufacturers of film need to certify the film they sell in the state. Ask your dealer if they are using ceritified film.
Sticker Requirements The sticker to identify legal tinting is required between the film & glass on each tinted window.
Medical Exemption State allows medical exemptions for special tint. For more details about the specific terms of the exemption, consult your state law.

Wish I would have known that when I bought the "legal" tint. If you administered the light meter test, and it failed by that 2%, would you make the person rip their tint off? Not sure how strict the rules are for cops on this...
