I recall my conversation with Snowbird pilot, Jake Miller, that I befriended at the several Abbottsford shows. I asked him if he worried about the guy on his right and he said, " What guy on my right? I have a contract to clear the guy on my left and I fly on him." They are locked in to one thing and pay no attention to anything else.

On the 19th of June 1962 the same happend to four F 104 of the German Luftwaffe when they crashed into an open pit mining field during a practice flight. After that accident the German Luftwaffe cancelled the plans for an aerobatic team forever and ever.

I remember my Dad pointing out the sooty vertical stabilizer of the slot F-100 to me. I think they later left it dark, and possibly made it out of something more heat resistant? Same "problem" with the F-4 Phantoms apparently.

The F-100s used from 1956 to 1963 were C-models, the ones used from 1964 to 1968 were D-models. Also, at some point, the team changed from F-16As (with a B-model as #7) to F-16Cs (presumably with a D-model as #7), but I don't know when that change occurred.
