tagged on to Dr Kanangas t-stat thread but didnt get any bites I am replacing the t-stat on a s1 gt4, and the housing is stuck. Nuts and washers removed, sleeve hose to the radiator downpipe removed so plenty of hand grip on the housing outlet. wd 40 has been sprayed on the 3 studs, and gentle tapping around the housing with a hammer. guessing time has created a strong bond between the surfaces. do i need to as gently as possible get something between the housing and the engine block facing to pry it and break the seal? eg a sharp paint spatula, flat head screwdriver? note this is a housing with no bleed screw, if that makes any difference. I also dont have the airbox removed (i dont have a good tool to allow easy removing of all those 10mm nuts) but access is quite ok. appreciate any tips...
Some kind of blade & tap with a small hammer - I wouldn't use a screwdriver See the last pic in this post: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=141078622&postcount=29
If you own a carby, and plan on working on it you should get familiar with removing the air box......I can do it in my sleep. Should make getting that tstat housing off much easier as well
yes, its a carby... i started taking one carb nut off using a quarter inch socket on a screwdriver type handle, but ofcourse the 10mm socket wedges itself under the trumpet head. i dread bending over the engine bay with a 10mm spanner i need one of these gizmos shown between plier and screwdriver here. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=233861&highlight=weber+wrench
I use a craftman "locking" extension which prevents the socket from coming off. I use a thumb drive with a simple extension for everything but the forward most nuts, and for those i use a very long extension. to prevent the socket from binding up on the trumpets, loosen them all a little bit first... Glad to report Thermostat housing off, surfaces cleaned, new tstat dropped in. french made tstat from SuperP, perfect fit and i assume they know as well as anyone what willwork. It replaced a pretty mangled OEM tstat which looked to be stuck open, confirming a Fchat diagnosis that the extremely cold running was a stuck open tstat (at least i hope..) Airbox remained in place. The magic key to getting the housing off was carefully using a long screwdriver under the housing outlet, bridgeing with the some point on the block and getting some leverage that way. 1-2 levers and off it came. Photos to come.
that nutdriver is the go Peter, as a normal socket starts to foul the trumpet as it comes up due to its height. a nutdriver is on the list
some detail, opened tstat housing (air box on), new + old tstat, and all back together with fresh hose (not fancy, just hose) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
