well, the surfaces were properly prepped and Wurth has assured us of it's integrity in this application... but i nevertheless agree with your point about the risks outweighing any real benefits so i will speak with Mike about whether we should return it to it's state prior to painting. i guess you would feel the same way about the windedge flaps then ? thanks
i should clarify, the anti-splash plates are not painted. they are coated with dry graphite. Mike's running late today (his girlfriend is expecting and it was a rough night for both) so i haven't been able to discuss sump pan with him yet.
Mike confirmed that the "light dusting" of paint he applied to the properly prepped surface will not flake or pose any future problem. however, i feel that in a risk v.s. reward scenario, the risk outweighs the reward and will therefore remove the paint. i defer to either of you on matters such as this and Mike is comfortable taking your advice on this.
the 'mostly' reassembled tranny. we are awaiting the arrival of some new o-rings, ring nuts, seals, a pivot ball and and reverse switch. thanks John, much appreciated. the work continues and i have a bunch of pics i would like to post to update the thread. today might be the day. we are completely caught up on all three big projects we working on right now and are simply waiting on parts that are held up in customs.
some further pics of various parts in both the 'before', 'during' and 'after' stages. very time consuming as everything first goes in the hot water jet washer, then is applied with paint stripper (if necessary, then rewashed), then bead blasted, primed, painted /wrinkle coated. the fourth pic down shows 3 different stages. the exhaust valve cover has been jet washed, had 1 application of paint stripper and then pressure washed again. regarding the intake covers, both had been reapplied with stripper and rewashed and obviously one had also been blasted. from there, the parts only get touched with gloves while they are being blown free of media and then primed and painted. the flash in the pics do the wrinkle no justice. Do you paint the wrinkle finish at room temp or do you bake them after painting? I always found that warming the parts while drying made a big difference on the texture. Cheers, Paul
heat, absolutely...but i've found that preheating is best way to get the desired result...when you're just spray bombing, that is.
Brett, The work you do on these cars is nothing short of amazing man! Love looking at how the cars look new again when you get done with them! You must do it for love because there is not enough money in 400's to make it highly lucrative! Keep up the good work and the flame burning! James
thanks James but the real credit has to go to Mike. he is the one who makes them sing and dance. and yes...we're never gonna get rich.
Greetings... Please use safety glasses when grinding. YOU KNOW BETTER... You remind me of my father grind w/ no glasses or goggles. R
It's actually Mike in the pictures as i'm working the camera... and man o man, trust me when i tell you, i'm always nagging him to use both eye and ear protection. first and foremost for himself obviously...but i've also reminded him that i'm 'beat' without him. tranny was completed...shifts beautifully. i'll lay out all of the finish work and new parts (flywheel, pressure plate, timing chain, etc.) later for pics. great! thxs brett, the cars just been a dream for me...the only bad part is that i dont drive it enough!!!!
all David's parts have arrived and we can start building his motor now that everything has been refinished. the car is off to the bodyshop to have 3 small areas touched up before a full wetsand, cut and polish. the only problem is the snow on the ground...haven't figured out how we'll roadtest. we decided with David that we'll reinvest the money we saved on the tranny by replacing the front shock and suspension bushings. we're always making progress in various ways but David and i are both in the Northeast so there is no rush...which is a good thing because there was a minor setback with the Victor Reinz head gaskets that were part of the standard engine gasket set from Eurospares... ...and by "minor setback" i mean that they failed the Factory hydraulic test miserably...caveat emptor. the real progress being made on this project right now is on the paint side. the car has been at the painters for a couple of weeks.
