DING, DING, DING.....we have a winner! Crawled under the dash and traced out the solonoid wire. It goes right into a little black box that says "made in Canada". She's got an ignition kill alarm on her. Apparently it sets by locking the doors but doesn't always turn off when you unlock them. Occasional no start problem solved. Anyone want to guess what I'm taking out this weekend?
Probably not needed...I leave the keys in mine, if they steal it they'll bring it back, when they learn the tune up costs...................
Damn, is she pretty!! I'm a great fan of the 400, and despite everything telling me not to do so, I still can't help looking at 400's, wondering how well they'd do as my everyday driver... With fuel prices soaring (we're are $7.40 per gallon now), and 30K miles per year, it really doesn't make sense, of course. But still.... Anyway, picking up the Dino from the shop tomorrow after nearly 3 weeks. Hope that that will end my rather severe withdrawal symptoms.... Hans P.S. How does the 400 do as an everyday driver? Are they indeed financial suicide, or....???
Hey Dave! Great story and glad to hear you found the cause of the car's only seeming ill. I think I saw that car a few weeks ago if memory serves me correctly Enjoy her in good health. You got a good 'un! Cheers, Aaron '82 GTSi '83 400iA
I saw that car when I was at Tim's shop recently (and briefly at Sebring over the weekend)- very pretty color, and in excellent condition. Enjoy!
Thanks for the compliment. You're right about the condition, but of course you saw it for yourself. Hard to believe it is 23 years old isn't it? Ira, did we meet in Sebring? Were you sitting at the table against the back wall with the group from the northeast? If so, tell the truth....did you tell someone the jokes I told that night? (too many margaritas and I think I'm a comedian)
Dave Your car looks much better in your photos than it did on the dealer's website. It also matches your garage door - very classy! Aidan
Heya Dave, I was glad to speak to you for a moment while you were actually finalizing the deal on that gorgeous car. I guess you made it through Alabama without incident - I half listened out for you - but was glad no assistance was needed. Sounds like a great, and well appreciated car. Congratulations again.
Well, I do admit that I slowed down and let all the traffic around me get way ahead so when I hit the tunnel at Mobile I had the road all to my self. Dropped her into 3rd and laid my right foot on the floor. <laughing> What a sound!
Hans, There is a thread here somwhere about using a 400 daily. Once they are sorted, they are reliable! Dave, Glad you found the bug, sorry about the comment, but I couldn't resist! Regards, Art S.
Dave: I am quite familiar with your 412, since I purchased a 400i convertible from Ed just before X-mas. Your car was in his show room, and I looked at it several times. Also talked to Tim about it, since you had it at his shop when I was there buying belts for mine. Both Ed and Tim are two great people to work with... One question. I noticed the low milage, but could not help asking myself about it. This is due to the condition of the engine bay, the lack of black paint on parts of the engine and other ares. It looked to me it was faded due to age and usage. Hope you are right. Both Ed and Tim told me about you buying the car and to drive it home. Glad it worked out. About the starting problem. I had the same happen to mine (30721). I was told by Dock who detailed your car as well, this could be because of the AC situation. If you have the AC on and stop the car, there is a chance the compressor is engaged and under pressure. You may not have a release fuction on this when you start the car, and the starter can't turn it over. I turn off the AC for the last couple of miles before I stop, and this has corrected my problem. Quite a surprise to see your note, knowing you just drove home. All the best, and attached you will find a picture of my 400i. 400 gts.
Mine is a 400i, not a 412. Mileage is documented (read all of my first post on this thread) If you look closely at the valve cover you can see where some numb-nuts used a solvent based engine cleaner and stripped a bit of the wrinkle finish valve cover paint off. The starting problem on mine had nothing to do with the a/c. It had to do with an aftermarket ignition kill alarm system on the car. Which, as of this morning, is no longer there.
Looking back through my notes you might be talking about the blue 412 Ed had last year. 28,000 miles on that one.
Nice day here today so I was able to take a few better pictures. Sunshine sure changes the color of this car. Oh, and so does cleaning the lens on the camera. I had to lighten the picture of the dash quite a bit so the colors are off. Look at the picture of the rear seats, thats the correct color. You'll get the idea. Well it took 3 tries but I got her to pass Texas emissions. Texas only puts the sniffer up one tailpipe. I had to keep leaning it out on the "sniffed" side. The CO numbers were dropping but still out of range. After 3 tries I leaned it out enough to get by. Who would have thought.....a 400i that actually PASSED emissions. WOO HOO!
Reminds me of the first time I saw a 400/412 on the road. It, too, was blue. I was living in Houston at the time. (mid-late 80s) The blonde driving it blew my doors off on Richmond Ave.... Congrats on a great find.
