Tony Dron wrote in Classic and Sportscar about this film and I read on another website the same story, that while awesome it is indeed a fake. Im not saying its fake in that it was not a Ferrari or he didnt make the drive. Its just that the sound has been proven as being dubbed. How? Some guys followed the exact route he takes in the movie and measured the distances from various points to points and the total. They then measure the time he takes to cover said distance in the movie and calculate his average speed. This is then compared to the gear changes he makes in the film. Along the Champs E'lysses (sp) heading down to the Arc de Triumph the film has him revving out in 5th gear. However, using the time required to cover the distance he averaged about 50mph. Thats not wound out in 5th. I have a copy of the film (old copy of VHS) and its a real hoot to watch. The fact that its staged and such.... so what its still fun. Terry
Never seen it. Are you saying it's better than Bullit? If it is I must go out and get hold hold of a copy
1998 release - has Robert De Niro, Sean Bean, Jean Reno in the cast. Set in France, has a very gritty feel to the film. As well as the excellent car chases (most noteably the one at the end), it is a pretty good film as well. http://www.play.com/play247.asp?searchtype=r2title&searchstring=ronin&page=search&Go.x=14&Go.y=12
In my opinion, the best ever film showing a car at its limit.Jeremy Clarkson is quoted as saying "It makes Bullit look like a cartoon" but what does he know. The film is only 12 minutes long, but turn up the volume and listen to the V12.The footage is unstaged and continous. What about the car chase in the film Seven Ups, starring rod Schneider. David Higgins
My all time fave has to be Mad Max, but there is great sequence in Cold Sweat, with Charles Bronson heel-and-toeing the bolox off an Opel Kadett!
Rendezvous is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen! Listen to the audio, the way the screaming engine, gearshifts etc bear no resemblence to what is happenng on the road! In the first minute or so when he is heading down the long straight bit of road, he the soundtrack has him screaming to red line in each gear, all the way through to top - yet he doesn't appear to be going much faster than 60mph visually! He barely go past some of the small cars / vans at no more than 20mph more than the speed of the other car, yet should be doing 150mph the way the engine is sounding! Towards the end he goes up a narrow side street at a consistent 20 - 30mph I would say - really not that fast - yet again the audio has him screaming up through all the gears right through to top! The driving definitely isn't staged, but that ain't the real soundtrack thats for sure, its been added on after.
I watched Bad Boys II last night. Great over-the-top car chase scenes. Most of them included shots of Will Smith's character's 575M. Best scene, I think, is on the bridge where the bad guys toss cars off a car carrier to block the chasers. Amazing shots!
EK3R, Took on board your comments about the audio. Listened / watched it several times. I believe the straight run has the car in excess of 120MPH, look at the speed of the early morning French taxi,s they must be doing at least 45MPH the ferrari goes past them like there standing still. The driver feathers the throttle in all the right places and on occasion backs off completely. The sound changes tone dependant on the surroundings, close buildings or open areas. The gear changes are swift and also includes a missed gear where the driver buzz,s the engine, unlikeley to be included in a fake sound recording.I phoned a friend who owns a 275 GTB 2CAM and asked his opinion. He said it does,nt sound unlike his car but believes its a 4cam Lightweight racing version. Does anyone know the truth ? Ever recorded your car at a trackday or in a actual race it always seems so pedestian unlike Rendezous.
Hi I got this back from UKTV Gold. -for thoses that missed it... A date for your diary. Thank you for your email regarding Ronin. This film will be showing again on UKTV Gold on Friday January 14th (2005) at 10.15pm so I hope you manage to catch it then. Your sincerely, Rachel UKTV Gold
I know this is almost sacrilege on forums like this, but I agree with Eric. I'd heard a lot about Rendezvous but when I watched it had the feeling that it was very much "played" with. Sound and video do not seem to match up very well, and the speeds in certain clips didn't seem right - looking at scenery, and particularly people, it looked like the speed had been notched up. Perhaps not by a massive amount, but played with nonetheless. I seem to recall a few bits where he goes through some narrow streets in/around some squares that looked particularly bad. The sound and video synch could simply be because the video was done a while ago and wasn't done well, but at the end of the day it reminded me more of an American car chase than a genuine vid. BTW, I've filmed my car many times on track, both with a remote lens/audio set up and with the inbuilt mic/lens on the camera. The sound and video can indeed sound more pedestrian than you remembered them, but the whole attitude of the car matches the sound in a way that I simply did not get with Rendezvous. Not to mention it being wholly unbelievable that there wasn't a single officeur of the leur out there.
Indeed, "Ronin" is a great movie! The chases in Paris and Nice are stunning! But have you guys already seen "The Hidden"? The opening scene is a long breathtaking chase of a black Ferrari 308, wich ends a bit bad for the car! Turn of the movie after this! The story itself kinda sucks, an alien that lands on earth and starts acting criminal and murdering people And the alien loves Ferrari's... No kidding! Further in the movie there's a red Mondial Cabrio stolen from a dealer... Bad movie, but great chase!
Ronin is my favorite chase scene movie - I've seen it twice this year, and lately I'm not one to rewatch movies (except Kill Bill). As far as real-life stuff, the Getaway In Stockholm series is unbelievable... that guy is nuts!
I agree, Ronin is absolutely fabulous!!!! What I also like about it is that the cars they use are more real world than in movies like Bad Boys etc. IMO that makes it even more exciting. There has been written and said a lot about the Rendez-vous video. Autovisie, a Dutch car magazine did an article about it recently. They went to Paris and spoke to a lot of people. They also tried to drive the same route through Paris in the early hours for a couple of times. After all that they came to the conclusion that the sound does not match the video. The engine sound is definately from a 12 cylinder Ferrari, and specialists that have studied the sound say it's most likely from a 330P3 or P4. But where can you record such a soundtrack? You can hear the car that was used for the sound shift up through all gears and running flat out. Another question was, whose P3 or P4 is it? It is assumed that the car is Pierre Bardinon's and that the sound has been recorded at his track. What car has been used to film the whole sequence is still unknown. For too many possibilities have been named and Claude Lelouche (the filmmmaker) has never said anything about it, nor has he about the exact car that was used to record the sound. The most remarkable thing that the writers of Autovisie found out was that if you look at the film closely it doesn't look all that fast, but when trying to replicate the drive through Paris in the same time they failed. Therefore, it's still a fast drive, but certainly not with a Ferrari. BTW, Rendez-vous was not filmed in accordance with the police. That's also why to this date no one knows who drove the car in the film.
Great chase, that movie would have been 10x better had the camerawork not been handled by a person with Parkinson's and ADHD.
