I heard this rumor last week and didn't take much to it -- but apparently MLB is saying Vegas is the leading candidate for yet another Oakland team to move to.

Here was the rumor. The Rio would be torn down and the new enclosed stadium would be built there. The Palms would be across the street. It was just fully renovated and taken over by a well respected California Tribe.

LV has Oakland's AAA team called the Aviators. Its pretty well attended for a AAA team. The other semi-rumor is that Raider's Mark Davis is looking to build an NBA stadium to buy into a team and move them to Vegas. There is a perfect place for it at the north end of the strip within walking distance of the new Resorts World hotel.

Las Vegas reportedly leading candidate should A’s relocate

    https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/baseball/las-vegas-reportedly-leading-candidate-should-as-relocate-2351508/

Major League Baseball has given the Oakland Athletics permission to begin looking at possibly relocating and a published report says Las Vegas could be the team’s next home.

The team said it is concerned with the lack of progress local officials have made on plans for a new stadium, the league announced Tuesday.

If the team is not successful in landing a new stadium in Oakland, Las Vegas is the likely landing spot, according to an ESPN report that noted the success the NFL’s Raiders and the NHL’s Golden Knights have had here.

“MLB is concerned with the rate of progress on the A’s new ballpark effort with local officials and other stakeholders in Oakland,” a statement from MLB obtained by the Review-Journal read. “The A’s have worked very hard to advance a new ballpark in downtown Oakland for the last four years, investing significant resources while facing multiple roadblocks.

“We know they remain deeply committed to succeeding in Oakland, and with two other sports franchises recently leaving the community, their commitment to Oakland is now more important than ever.”

The two other teams noted in MLB’s statement are the Raiders, who kicked off their maiden season in Las Vegas last year, and the Golden State Warriors, who moved into the Chase Center in San Francisco in 2019.

As was the case in the Raiders relocating to Las Vegas, issues with the aging Oakland Coliseum are at the forefront.

In a few years Vegas went to being a little town to not so little anymore: nhl,mlb,nfl...
Still a rather small town in a sense but it’s changing! Great for real estate.

My understanding is that the Las Vegas Aviators are the biggest drawing minor league team in MLB. In fact they have routinely outdrawn the Marlins pre-Covid.

The Aviators have an almost brand new stadium in Summerlin which is the more wealthy part of Vegas on the far West side.

I thought the hesitancy in professional teams moving to Vegas used to be the gambling, in particular sports betting?

Rio Rumor Mill: Las Vegas Casino Could Be Demolished, Possible Future Site of MLB Ballpark
    Posted on: October 8, 2018, 01:00h.

The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino rumor mill is once again churning, and the latest gossip is that the off-Strip property is headed for demolition to make way for a Major League Baseball (MLB) ballpark.

The latest comes with Vital Vegas, which comes from ear-to-the-ground blogger Scott Roeben. In August, the media site relayed rumors that Caesars Entertainment was actively shopping the casino resort.

This week, Roeben upped the ante “with another juicy tidbit: As we’ve shared, could very well be a land play. New rumor suggests Rio could be demolished, site to be developed as (wait for it) Major League Baseball ballpark.”

Las Vegas welcomed its first major professional sports franchise by way of the NHL Golden Knights for the 2017-18 hockey season. The NFL Oakland Raiders are slated to kick off in Sin City in the fall of 2020.

With two of the four “big four” pro leagues in Las Vegas, there’s been plenty of speculation that the NBA and MLB will join in on the Sin City fun as well.

    If You Build It
Station Casinos parent Red Rock Resorts purchased the Palms in 2016 for $312.5 million. The casino resort, which sits just west of the Rio, was originally scheduled to undergo a $350 million renovation. That price has since ballooned to $620 million.

Roeben speculates that the Fertittas, the billionaires who own a majority stake in Station Casinos, might know something the rest of us don’t.

“There’s been a spike in investor interest in parcels around Rio. The speculation part: If an MLB ballpark plan is in the works, it’s an ‘Aha’ moment for why Stations has invested so much in Palms when it can’t possibly recoup the investment—unless they know something we don’t,” a Vital Vegas tweet read on Monday.

Like the $1.8 billion NFL stadium being built just west of I-15 between Hacienda Avenue and Russell Road, an MLB ballpark in Las Vegas would need to be a domed facility due to the Southern Nevada desert heat.

The plot of land the Rio sits would be more than capable of becoming an MLB site. The roughly 100 acres is nearly 40 more than the acreage where the Raiders stadium is being built.

    Sports Epicenter
Las Vegas was shunned by the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL for decades due to the city’s widespread sports betting, but with the federal ban now repealed and some sort of gambling found in nearly every state in America, that attitude is quickly changing.

MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren, whose company has a 50 percent stake in T-Mobile Arena, hopes to bring the town an NBA team. MGM already owns the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces.

“I would think it would be highly plausible that an NBA team would like to relocate to what’s becoming one of the sports capitals of the US,” Murren declared in August after MGM reached a partnership deal with the NBA. “I frankly think it will happen. It’s a pretty fun place to watch sports.”

That makes no sense with so much vacant land in the North and South ends of the valley, including 10 minutes south of the Rio.

Luxor Las Vegas Demolition Rumors Spread, Insiders Say Days Numbered for MGM Casino

    Posted on: June 29, 2020, 08:07h.

The Luxor Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip has been a staple of the city skyline since it opened in 1993. But the iconic pyramid could be facing a much shorter existence than its ancient counterparts in Egypt.

The Las Vegas skyline could be forever changed should the gossip prove true regarding the Luxor pyramid being demolished. (Image: Ethan Miller/Getty)

Scott Roeben, the Las Vegas insider who has more sources than an encyclopedia and runs the popular Twitter account Vital Vegas, says Luxor parent company MGM Resorts is strongly considering demolishing the budget and family-friendly Strip property.

Our sources say company officials have discussed demolition of both Luxor and Excalibur for at least five years, but have been unable to proceed due to union contracts. It’s possible the COVID-19 shutdown has paved the way for what’s to come for Luxor,” Roeben explained.

MGM Resorts’ real estate investment trust MGM Growth Properties owns the physical assets of Luxor. Today, it has 4,397 hotel rooms, and casino floor measuring 101,000 square feet.

Roeben went on to say that Las Vegas has pivoted away from themed resorts in recent years. MGM has already transformed Monte Carlo into Park MGM, and largely done away with the “Wizard of Oz” theme at MGM Grand.

Another Strip resort to fold on its original theme includes Treasure Island. Now known as TI, the casino no longer inundates guests with themes of the treasured adventure novel, and it canned its free nightly show “Sirens of TI” in 2013.

    End of Era?
Built at a cost of $375 million, Luxor opened just south of Excalibur on October 15, 1993. Named after the town in Egypt, the Luxor pyramid on the Strip is modeled after the Red Pyramid, the largest of the three major pyramids found at the Dahshur necropolis in Cairo.

When Luxor opened, the 30-story resort was the tallest structure on the Strip.

Though MGM has invested in renovations to the Egyptian-themed casino, including a $300 million project in 2007 to remodel 80 percent of the resort’s public areas to focus more on adults, the building’s design makes it nearly impossible to fully move away from its original motif.

There are plenty of Luxor fans who fretted the Vital Vegas news.

“If Las Vegas is to survive, maybe they need to get back to attracting families,” said Shawn Smallman on Twitter. “I personally like both Luxor and Excalibur.” “I don’t care if it’s not fancy, it’s another place I love,” said another Twitter user. “We already had to deal with the pain of losing classics like Stardust, Frontier, and Riviera.”

    Just Rumors
MGM Resorts has made no official comment on the Luxor rumors, so for now, fans of the property shouldn’t overly worry. And while Roeben’s track record is solid, Las Vegas is ever-changing and plans – and rumors – often change.

Last year, there were rumblings around town that Caesars Entertainment was actively moving towards demolishing the Brazilian-themed Rio. Rumors suggested the decision was to make way for a MLB ballpark.

It turned out not to be the case, as the off-Strip resort was sold for $526.3 million to Eric Birnbaum’s Dreamscape Companies. Birnbaum says there are no plans to demolish the resort, and he has entered into a two-year leaseback exchange with Caesars for the casino company to operate Rio for $45 million in annual rent.

WoW tearing down the Luxor would be unexpected. It’s nothing fancy nowadays , it’s a bit dark but it’s cheap.

I stayed at the Luxor back in the 90s as a kid...thought the elevators were fun. I'm not sure why they are trying to dump all the themed hotels in Vegas...that's one thing that separates it from other destinations that are generic hotels/buildings.

The Vegas world is moving away from these "theme park" hotels. Luxor and Excalibur are amongst the worst. The Japanese themed Imperial Palace came back as the Linq, which is kind of hip place for younger people who can't afford the Cosmo.

Even MGM has debadged itself from its classic movie past. The future is more like CityCenter and the Cosmopolitan.

That's what I've heard. Its not that fancy but cleaned up.

The location is excellent though. And you can jump on the monorail and go to the Convention center for like 5 bucks and 10 minutes of time.

I looked at ticket prices to a Vegas Raiders game - insane.

Then I looked at the Phoenix Cardinals, those I can afford.

People in LV fly to Phoenix to see Golden Knights games. The prices are often 1/4 what they are in Vegas.
