Reading EVO issue (n°161) this month, there's a special on engine sounds: The Art of noise
On page 77 is an article entitled, "The greatest Six" and, it's the Alfa Romeo "Busso" V6

A year is already passed from when I was able to put my hands on an Alfa 147 GTA (only 13.600,as good as new ) equipped with the last version of the V6 3.2 24V (250 hp)

Luque I very much love the Busso motor as well, have only heard it personally a very few times. Would love to see your GTA. I'm sure I already know the answer but what do you prefer better, the Busso V6 or the 1750 TBI in your Giulietta?

Within the coming years I will have the song of a twin cam 1600 Alfa motor as I am looking for a light project Duetto. I just love Alfas

I owned an Alfa Milano with the 2.5 V6 and miss that Busso so much. It's such a great engine, especially later with the 3.0 and 24V versions.

I remember my friend used to rant and rave about his VR6, but the Busso is in league of it's own.

That's my favorite Alfa, I remember seeing one on the streets of Rotterdam the last time I was there in the early 90's. Couldn't get close and then lost it in traffic...

Such a beauty! Thanks for showing it. :)

    Ciao Brian,
I hope you will able to see my GTA pictures through the links.
This weekend was rainy but I hope next sunday I will be able to make same nice IN -CAR video.
Well the V6 has a very different behavior in comparison to the Turbo Multiair (my version is 170 Hp 1368 cc 4L). There is no variable manifolds and variable valve timing. So basically there is just one resonant tuning point at about 4800 rpm and it come like a thunder and it push hard up to 6800 rpm. It’s amazing. I Like a lot using the selespeed electrohydraulic transmission to hear nice blips on the throttle during shift down changes …
Well city MPG are a bit nasty (13 mpg = 5,5 km/lt) but anyway ….
The Multiair is impressive. Very torquey just from 1500 rpm, permits, with start & stop function active driving carefully to up shift early, to reach city MPG = 26 …. This is impressive for a 170 Hp turbo engine.
I hope you will be lucky in your Duetto research.
Are you searching for a type 4 (last version) or for very rare 'Osso di seppia' or a Coda tronca ?

PS I should subscribe F-Chat to make my pictures visible ? I tried every kind of possible code but it appears only the link

Mine was actually pretty good considering the condition and age. Alfa's are very dependent on routine maintenance and don't like to be thrashed when cold, somewhat like older Ferrari's.

Most of my Alfa buddies had little problems with their Milano's but were talking about car enthusiasts, not your average buyer.

Wow that V6 is pretty thirsty, but well worth it I'd say. I didn't realize that was your GTA, I love it, it's such an awesome car.

I'd love to drive a Giulietta with that engine, it's a pretty advanced motor. Can't wait for that 300hp DI motor coming from Alfa soon though!

I'm searching for a series 1 duetto so the 'Osso di seppia.' I almost had one a few years ago and have finally decided that I must have one. I just have to have an Alfa, you never see them here in the states, only from the hardcore enthusiast and Alfisti

    Hi!
    I'm the owner of a 1984 GTV6 2.5.

I've read several good opinions in in different magazines, like the british Classic&Sport Cars, who said some like "the Bussone is one of the best sounding engines, this side of a Maserati V8..." The 3.0, both in 12v or 24v configurations, is less happy free revving as the short stroke 2.5. Thats the reason why I prefer the 2.5.

My V6 is a bit unrestricted, it sounds, but is not agreesive for street use. I enjoy to remember the reactions of some people once the "sound volume pedal" is pressed.

I'm currently rebuilding a 3.0 12v to replace the trusty 2.5, now with 290.000km under its belts. The 3.0 has some flywheel lightening to help the lazy 3.0 to rev faster...

    A nice piece of metal...

I agree, the 2.5 Busso is better sounding than the 3.0.

While I love the Busso sound, and it's so rare in America, I think I actually prefer the Maserati V6 from the Citroen SM and Merak:

The Dino 2400 sound isn't bad either:

Tough one!.......They both sound fantastic and I think you may be right about the Merak V6. It even sounds better in real life. I still love and miss the sound of a Busso V6.

I have owned every version but the 2.0 turbo(although I did hear one in a 116 spider a friend owns) and have to say the 2.5 versions sounds the best in my opinion. Here is a video of a 2.5 race version tuned with the same Autodelta cams as on my street GTV6. The 2.5 is a high rev screamer. I always wanted to get one of the 2.8 Shankle conversion kits as it was an oversquare version of the already short stroked 2.5.
