So I guess this is confirmation that Mercedes do indeed have a powerful influence in the FIA since Mr Wollf suggested this after the Monaco GP qualifying.

Are these rules and decisions now being media led!

That rule makes sense to me. I hope it's adopted.

    Please explain the logic?

Should they then transpose that rule to the race as well, anyone causing a incident should be disqualified?

Funny, how the driver directly affected by this said nothing needs changing...yet the totonator opens his mouth and the seas are parted.

As I understand it, the rule calls for the deletion of lap times for someone who provokes a red flag during qualifications.

Impossible to know if the incident is genuine or somehow ..."calculated" to prevent the other drivers to establish their best time in the last minutes of quali.

It's not the same situation during a race, as whoever provokes a red flag is usually eliminated, if it's ever restarted.

Remember the red flag doesn't occur very often.

    Exactly

There is already a mechanism within the FIA sporting regulations for this very situation, Article 31.4

31.4 In the event of a driving infringement during any practice session the Stewards may delete a driver’s lap time (or lap times) or drop the driver such number of grid positions as they consider appropriate. Unless it is completely clear that a driver committed a driving infringement any such incident will normally be investigated after the relevant session.

The problem is that once you go down the path of suspecting a driver has committed a deliberate action then the flood gates open for any infringement or incident to be construed as deliberate. Blocking by Verstappen at the start of the Monaco GP start could be viewed as a deliberate action to cause a incident.

The race re-starts after red flag. So should qualy. As fans we were denied competition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Add 3 min re-start and let the OTHER drivers compete so FANS get a competition. Also if you leave the garage and crash you should not get pole if you do not complete your lap!

I like current qualy format except for this situation in Monaco where qualy was stopped! RESTART!!!!!!!!!!

I was stating this before Toto started his assessment. Many of us were. If you can restart a race you can restart qualy. Not rocket science.

True but lest we forget, Enzo was able to part the seas for decades.

Instead of (still) being the force in F1, Ferrari is now running around with idiotic mission statements on their cars and driver suits.

How the mighty has fallen. Sad.

How do you get pole position if you dont complete a lap? or are you saying if you try to get another flying lap or returning to the pits and then crash your previous best time is deleted -

So do I and agree, restart Q1,2 or 3 accordingly. Trouble is with only 2 minutes left there wasnt enough time to restart it.

Add 2 minutes due to the idiot who crashed or 3 minutes. Write rule, enforce rule, continue qualy like they would the race. When they stop qualy cars eventually go to the garage, so adding 2-3 minutes should give the drivers who remain enough time start another flyer possibly. That would work at most circuits.

I applaud the FIA for being open to exploring this issue at least.

why not add 10 minutes or 15 minutes. You would then get moaners saying they want to add a extra minute because they just missed the chequered flag! Where would that end?

Are all drivers who crash or damage their cars - idiots. A millisecond misjudgment hardly warrants the label of an idiot!

The sporting regulations already have that mechanism so why add another layer of bureaucracy to it.

Idiot was not meant to insult. If they can stop and restart a race they can do the same for qualy. Its not that difficult.

    Exactly.

Adding a minute, 2 or 3 to a session is stupid. Hell even restarting Q3 in it's entirety doesn't make any sense. By the time all the **** is cleaned up, the track temperature will have varied enough that it's more than likely slower...So we spend 20 minutes waiting around twiddling our thumbs only for the result not to change.

In current format qualifying the drivers wait as long as possible so they're over the line the latest, as that's when theoretically the track is fastest. The downside of this is, if there is a yellow just ahead of you, you run the risk of not going faster as you have to lift. That's the gamble drivers take.

If we do time deletes and session resets now where will it all end?

This has nothing to do with the fact that it was Ferrari that “benefited” from this rule not being in place yet, yes?

I agree. Would it not be so funny that as soon as it’s adopted the “Indy” rule bites Toto in the backside? That would be so ironic, don’t you think?

No -All teams have to adhere to the sporting regulations and its well catered for to prevent cheating, this is the key principal, a misfortune is another matter. ie so if a car stops in a dangerous position due to mechanical failure and the red flag is shown to halt the qualifying on safety grounds then his fastest lap time is deleted.......Its a dumb idea imho

Your time should be deleted for calling a red flag because you penalise other drivers.

The idea is that nobody should benefit from a red flag in qualifs.

I think this idea has some traction, if it is adopted or not.

If it isn't, in a couple of years some joker will innocently pull the same stunt at Monaco.

Even if they add 3 minutes to the clock, and even if they delete the fast time of the perpetrator,

Those on hot laps may NOT have a tire capable of going as fast as they were on a lap already doing !!

so what happens if a driver pulls up because of mechanical failure and a red flag comes out for safety reasons. Does his best time on the previous lap / period get deleted?

Whoever causes a red flag that prevents the other competitors from finishing Q3 has all his times from that session deleted and will start from 10th position.

I can't say it simpler than that.

The problem is that it isnt that simple, why limit it to just Q3, Q2 and 1 are just as important to the grid positions.
You need to think about it a tad more William as your rule book would be immense!

Qualifications is like a crescendo going through 3 sessions, with the climax coming in the last few minutes. of Q3

The top drivers competing for pole see the grass cut from under their feet if they are not allowed to compete for pole up to the last second.

It is that important ! Whoever causes that interruption ought to be penalised.
