I have done 2 MM in the sister car of the Admiral, and multiple Le Mans Classic ,with even more expensive cars, and I am not sure which one is more dangerous for the car,,and driver. But if owners don’t want to race their race cars, they will all end up in museum and parades. Sad. There should be some middle ground for the pleasure of owners and of spectators too.

I’m just being honest. I’m grateful there are owners like yourself, but I doubt I’d have the stomach for the risk. As to your point about a middle ground, I think most spectators just get a thrill out of seeing and hearing the cars. So, maybe less actual racing and more lap times without other cars jockeying for position. I’m sure that wouldn’t satisfy the competitive spirits of owners like yourself, but it may bring other reluctant owners to the track.

Even worse. The 3 replicas at Laguna Seca were brought by people who do not also have the real item in their garage. They just have a replica. Two „312‘s“ and a „250 TR“ were at Laguna Seca. No genuine 312 and no genuine 250 TR61 Spider in ownership of these posers.
Organisers really don‘t seem to care.
    I miss Steve Earle.

I can't believe they are allowing replicas, whether the owners own the real deal or not. That's pathetic.

    Dear Pierre,

The best outlet for me was the ability to take the car on a race track at the annual FCA meetings. They always have their shows at or near a big track. I have had the opportunity to drive for four hours on track at Elkhart Lake (Road America) and three years ago I had two full hours on track at Laguna Seca. That was an absolutely perfect day, the car was strong, the brakes, clutch and tranny were all right on and the nut behind the steering wheel didn't do anything stupid. With a right hand drive car I found the infamous Corkscrew not that difficult as one can easily see the right hand apex. The car is really at home on a track, not so much on the street.

    Best regards,

    Robert

In litigation friendly USA somebody should sue organisers for not telling truth on entry lists....... and programs.

What’s even worse are the real cars chopped up to make these replicas.

My post was mostly for the sake of discussion, as the Admiral's reaction to the sale of the car says it all, really. I agree Gooding did a great job of selling the car, and I don't share Walter's view (should have made that clear in my previous post). I was just wondering whether a different auction at another time in the year with less competition (between other lots and other auctions) could fetch a higher result. Probably not. It doesn't matter either way.

I’ve seen a real GTO hit a wall during historic races at Mt. Tremblant. Driver had sore wrists (always let go of the wheel before you hit a wall). The car was damaged and rode a flat bed off the track. I’m positive both driver and car are perfect today. At this level, fixing a car is nothing.

I’ll also be forever thankful for seeing roughly 18-20 GTOs and other Ferraris on the track at Laguna Seca in 2004. They may not have been going 10/10s, but they were not parade laps either. Sadly, I suspect 2004 may be the last time.

Folks, these old bangers are beautiful, but they’re still cars. It’s a shame they are turning into investments. As Joni Mitchell sang, “They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum. Then they charged the people a dollar and a half just to see em.” Way of the world, I guess.

    Location, location, location, is everything.
For sure Pebble Beach was the very very best place to offer the Mondial. All the money of the world was there last weekend.

Admiral your driving skills are excellent. Hence I was mostly behind you at Road America in a 365 BB with 380 HP on tap listening to the noise coming from your car. Great memories.

    Hey Gino,

Thanks for the complement for this old guy. I always have had a great time on a track with this car.

It should be seen back in your area again as the buyer lives outside Milwaukee.

    Robert

There is a healthy appetite at the FCA to have a dedicated "vintage" run group at the National Meet or the other larger scale track events....We tried to mustard up a group at Road America during the Challenge race last year but could not get enough firm commitments with the limited runway we had to work with to justify carving out the time. Watkins Glen is just over two weeks out and the schedule is already set, however for Scottsdale next year if we can capture enough interest from the vintage crew it will happen.

For any of you vintage guys with this interest, pm me with the format (number of sessions, days, etc.) that would be most desirable and I can put the wheels in motion. The club does enough track events across the country annually, setting up a season of track time / gentlemen racing a la the Shell Histrionics but perhaps slightly more focused on use and enjoyment versus trophies and champagne is quite achievable...Just need cars and enthusiasm.

Sorry to derail the thread...Congrats Admiral, well done and well deserved. If the car is going to the collector in Milwaukee I assume it is going to, everyone will have plenty of time to see this car shown, driven and enjoyed.

The vast majority of modern cars are down, most classics seem static although some of the rarest are up.

    sorry tim...my,
I don´t understand those numbers. for example:
what means the $300,000, what the $350.000 N/R, 346,000. what means MID ?
could you or someone else explain this to me please?

and what means here the -9%, for what? discount?

Hope you and your family had a great time in Monterey; you were very pleasant company on the plane from Phoenix.
Give my best to your dad; I wish him well in whatever the next project will be.

    Estimate was between $300-$350k
    No Reserve
$346k is in the middle of the estimate

~91k is 9% less than the low end of the estimate range of 100-100k

Xtreme5053 nailed it, my apologies, I intended to add a key to that chart but it has been a VERY long week and I overlooked it
The +/-/mid is simply a point that the total gross sales price was either (mid) between the estimate range, (-) under low estimate or (+) above high estimate

The estimates don’t include buyers fees, do they? But your +/- percentages or “mid” is based on the total including buyers fees? I think that might not be the most accurate way to represent the results?
