    100K Euros for a car.... hmmm that would be nice. Assuming that I did not have my F550, I would spend the money as follows:

    1) If I was looking for modern cars, I would buy

    550 Maranello (75'000 Euro) or one of the early 575M (but ONLY with "Fiorano handling package"), you can find the cheapest bordering on 100K. Obviously the 575 wouldn't leave any spare cash, but...

    ...if I had chosen the 550, I would use the remaining 25'000 Euros for a used BMW M5 ('99-'01 5.0 V8) which could be driven every day and put a smile on my face even when the Ferrari is asleep in the garage :)

    2) If I wanted a modern and a classic, I would buy

    550 Maranello (75'000 Euro) and a good Maserati Khamsin (manual gearbox) - the Khamsin is one of the most beautiful, refined, rarest and unjustly forgotten supercars of the '70s. I drove one across the deserts of Arizona last summer, I know what I'm talking about!!

    3) If I wanted an "extreme supercar" I would buy

    Lamborghini Gallardo - the cheapest ones go for 115'000 Euro, so I would do as follows: 50'000 Euro downpayment + 1000 Euros X 48 months tax deductible leasing, final payment 25'000 Euro) - is that allowed? :)

    4) If I wanted just classics I would buy

    A shoddy Daytona looking for TLC (I agree with Simon on this one, but you've got to be British and Crazy to do something like this! :D :D ).

    or...

    A concours-condition Maserati Ghibli SS Spyder (1970) - one of the most elegant convertibles ever made, or a Mistral Spyder, or a small collection: Ghibli Coupe, Khamsin and 308GTB QV (all together make about 100K).

    Man, the possibilities to burn our hard-earned cash are LIMITLESS :) :) :)

    One problem, Ton - you can't find any for 100K. Last time I looked F512Ms started at 115K, and IMO that's way too much for what is basically a restyled 512TR. You can buy much better supercars for 115K (575M Fiorano, Gallardo, 360CS...) and also more valuable classics (512BB, 365GTB, Daytona, Miura, Countach LP400...)

    I agree on the classical part. Those cars are fantastic machines. But they are not the most reliable, user-friendly machines. And because Wolfgang said before that he also wants to use the car for some holiday reasons I think that maybe a modern car is a better choice.

    The difference between "super" sportcars and real supercars is a discussion that I would like to store until the Tuscany rally. That is a nice subject with a good glass of wine! :)

    No, not yet.
    Maybe the budget is still to low?
    Maybe to many cars I m in love with are around?

    Current dream list:
    - 1999 Lamborghini Diablo SV (last year with the better breakes and clear lights)
    - Porsche 917 Replica (knocks my socks off)
    - Ferrari 330 GTC, 512BB carb., 575M (all great cars but missing something)
    - Ferrari 360 CS (if I could get one for 100K?)
    - Lamborghini Countach (but NOT an Anniversary!)

    .....or stick with the "beast" for another year, save some more cash and top the budget?!?!
    But....this would drive me more crazy. Even with a 150K budget you start lurking for a 200K car......and with 200K you are looking for a .....a.s.o.

    I would stay with the TR. It doesn't get more outrageous. Or maybe consider one of the early Countach's. Real supercars!!!
    What else does a man need! :)

    Wolfgang, you are right about this "escalation" factor... but at some point we have to stop, for one simple reason. A modern 200-300K supercar will have maintenance costs proportioned to its technology. So while a Ferrari 275GTB is worth 400K for its historical value, mechanically it's simple and straightforward compared to, say, a Pagani Zonda, a Ferrari F40/F50 or a Mc Laren F1. Normal maintenance for a modern "ultra-car" is in the region of 10-20'000 Euro per year depending on mileage. A "big service" on a Mc Laren F1 will cost you as much as 50'000 Euro! And the delicate nature of the F40 means that you could not realisticaly expect to drive one regularly and spend less than 10-20K per year.

    So, even if my car budget approached 200-300K (I wish :) ) I know I would have to stop to something usable and relatively "mainstream" like a Murcielago or an F430, unless I was prepared to invest huge amounts of money every year. In the end it's like when you buy a used speedboat or a yacht, you know, maybe you think it's a bargain, for say 200'000 Euros you get yourself a nice 5-year old 18 metres with 2000 horsepower, 3 cabins, nice leather sofas and pretty girls in bikinis (oh perhaps you have to pay extra for those :D ) but when the maintenance bills come... you wish you'd stuck to cars! I think with "ultra-cars" it comes down to the same reality check when the mechanic's bills arrive...

    great post and very well said.
    Yes, the F40 is THE dream car but even (what I never ever can) if I could afford one, its way to expensive to maintenance the car.
    Since I drive my TR I m "a bit" used with high bills and free of pain.....still smiling when paying the bills.....but later on an at home headache and stomach pains :(

    It was a mistake,.....my mistake :( The car was priced at £ 235 000,- but the text in the add was so tiny and crumbled that I misread the price for £ 35 000,- :( **** happens.....

    Wolfgang, in 12 months the F550 cost me more for fuel & tires than for maintenance....

    Fuel: 800 Euros
    Tires: 500 Euros (4 new Bridgestone S02, found on e-bay)
    Maintenance: 400 Euros (mostly bodywork details)

    You could never drive an F40 and spend so little...

    Fuel: 3.000,- Euros........20 - 30 liters / 100 km, done 10.000 km`s
    Tires: 1.000,- Euros (4 new Pirellis bought at the dealer)
    Maintenance: 500,- Euros little service (engine & gear box oil changed)
    Extras: 1.200,- Euros (Fuse Box burned)

    I was lucky with my tires, at normal price the rears alone would have cost me 500 Euros each. But I always find good deals on the internet, no point getting ripped off!

    The big difference between us seems to be the fuel. OK I've only done 4000 Kms, but on the highway at constant (Swiss) speed my car only uses 12-14 l/100Km. Even when pushing it to the limit on the mountains I've never done worse than 25 l/100Km (average between "going up" and "coming down" :) ).

    These are the benefits of modern engines! My friends in the USA with vintage Maserati V8s and vintage Ferrari V12s tell me that fuel consumption is "always 10 mpg, whatever you do"... :)

    I guess if you use a car regularly, this is a not insignificant advantage of driving a modern supercar.

    Probably down to the fuel injection in my 308, but fuel consumption varies greatly between driving city and highway driving.

    Why should US people care about fuelconsumption? You only pay a quarter for fuel as we do in europe.;)
