To test the fuel injectors of my 400 i I build a test device myself. I used a old Bosch fuel pump which can produce at least 6 bar and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. (You can buy a new one at fuelpump.com for $ 45,00 look for a blue Ferrari (mondial) pump you can find adjustable fuel pressure regulators on ebay for $ 15,00.) With a metal T and a cap and some banjo eyes, and an on/off switch I build this test device.

When you put the system under pressure you can adjust with the fuel pressure regulator the system pressure. By adjusting the top screw of the regulator you can measure the opening pressure of the injectors. The 0437 502 047 should open at 3.8 bar and the 0437 502 010 should open at 3.6 bar. I have these figures from an old Bosch injectors list.

To measure leakage of the injectors you adjust the pressure to 4,8 or 5 bar (The normal control pressure for most Ferrari’s) and switch off the system. The adaptor of the fuel pump (with spring in it) and the fuel pressure regulator will maintain the pressure on the system. The pressure will drop because of the opening pressure of the injectors. The pressure should be 3.6 of 3.8 bar depending on the type of injector and the injector shouldn’t be dripping of leaking otherwise.

You can measure the flow of the injector by adjusting the pressure to 5 bar. Place a measuring cup under the injector and switch the system on for a limed time period. I measured a flow of 110cc in 2 minutes by 5 bar (new 047 injector with the system filled with gasoline/petrol). You can also check the spray pattern. This way you can check the injectors one by one and see if there are any differences between the injectors. The flow depends on the T piece and line size you use so this figure is not a absolute figure. You can use these figures only to compare the injectors. If one has a much higher or lower flow this will effect the way the engine runs because the mixture in the cylinder will not meet the air fuel ratio. To rich or to lean.

If the injectors don’t function the way the should you can try to clean them. You can fill the system with mineral spirits, white spirits (terpentine eu) and let them spray for a while. You can also lay the injectors in an ultrasonic bath to clean them. When there is dirt inside the injector it is very hard to clean. You can try to lift the outlet in the injector at the nozzle side with a tooth pick and blow air or brake cleaner in the top. I used all three methods and had to replace 3 out of 10.

I you find it hard to find the T piece, banjo eyes etc send a mail. I can send these items to you.

are you testing new injectors as well?
any idea on the fail rate for new injectors?

Hallo Geert Jan, wel een beetje opletten met die benzinedampen zo dichtbij die electriciteit, één vonkje en ...
Verder een compliment, goede setup om dit mee te testen! En de groeten uit Amsterdam. :D

I made a similar version without a fuel pump- I used my air compressor and a shrader type tire valve in the top of a 2 liter glass pickle jar to pressurize the jar (half filled with an injector cleaner and fuel mixture) to 125 psi. Another outlet valve on the jar top (with a pickup tube almost to the bottom of the jar) was then plumbed to a very similar looking stand that would hold each injector into another big jar so I could see the mist pattern and measure the flow vs. time. I opened and closed the injector with a 9 volt battery on a switch which sufficed.

Worked great and I got all the injectors on my old SL crystal clean this way. Geert's is more elegant with the fuel pump- but I'm cheap and thsi worked just great.

    Nice DIY-

I too have built a similar system. Mine used compressed air as well, and an old Sure-shot.

The bosch tool uses a hand pump. They come up on e-bay from time to time, but they are becoming rare.

My only concern is for your safety. The bosch fuel pump will draw a considerable amount of amperage. So, there's a potential for spark should your alligator clip become disconnected during a test. And, it looks to me like you are using gasoline, so you are creating vapor. Vapor + spark, well you know the rest. My advice would be to use mineral spirits for all of the tests (per bosch test procedures).

    Live long and prosper.

I have to say that was my concern too. But big credit for rigging up such a system!

    Hi

They sell the bosch pump look a like’s here in the Netherlands. They are to test diesel injector and can hold a pressure of 400 bar. I could find a petrol/gasoline one.

I course you need to take some safety measures. The spray that is coming out is the same as if you fill your tank with petrol. So don’t smoke make phone calls etc.

Excellent test set up Geert Jan.

I may make one of like kind when I improve my fuel system.

I went through this exact same issue with these Bosch injectors on a porsche 930...

I created a flow test (pressurized canister filled with injector cleaner)...

I tried backflushing the injectors...that was fruitless...

I tried ultrasonic cleaning...made no differnce on the bad injectors...

Here is what I figured out....

    1) Take a can of carb cleaner, wit the red straw, and shoot it thorugh the injector - if you get a nice pattern and the injector "hums"...you are fine...

    2) If you get a poor spray pattern... You can try back flushing. You can try ultrasonic cleaning... But it probably won't work. The proffesional injector cleaner specialists gave up trying to clean these injectors...and I now know why...

    3) I have seen new injectors on the net for $50... The ones for the 930 are $120 each as they screw in... Hence, I spent 2 weeks trying to clean them out...it was not successful.

Tons of threads on this on pelicanpartsdotcom... :) A non competing porsche site :) ....

Coarse thread, brass jacketed, CIS nozzles are a whopping 10-20 dollars each...
these are routine service replacement parts for CIS cars as a function of TIME as well as miles...
why would you spend all this time money and effort to "test" an interval service, replacement part?
Just change them...typically, with the advent of the hi alchohol content gasolines(2,5- isopentanes), thes rate of decay is at best 5 years, and dependign on your fuel supply, and vehicle use history, will be as low as 2-3 years.
This, by the way, is viewed through the prism of ther BOSCH CIUS system apps, NOT strictly limited to Ferrari apps.
As a former M/B shop foreman, Ferrari dlr. Driveline overhaul, and EPA certified emissions Laboratory research director, I can assure you that the majority of runnign problems which you seek to :view", cannot be done so with youyr setup..."break pressure" pintel drip, and seat seepage simply cannot be reproduced without a pressure pump such as the Bosch Factory tool...there is a reason which they designed it as such...afterall...

the result was 3 injectors of the 12 where to be replaced. "European" bosch injectors cost us dollar 50. I don't understand why the injectors in the USA are so cheap. In Germany Bosch country nr 1 the cost euro 40 (dollar 50). testing them saved a lot of money for me.
Ultrasonic cleaning and cleaning with mineral spirits improved the spray pattern.
