I got to see this last week in person. It is coming along nicely. I don't want to steep on Craig's toes so I'll let him give the update.

I was in armor for a brief period, before I changed my branch in the reserve. I got to drive a M-1A1 tank for about 2KM. In a car, the noise would be unreal-although the flat 12 would sound much better, when opened up with gutted precats and all the works. The gas turbine is nice to stand behind, about two meters during the winter season.

Good luck with what you are trying to find.

This thread is new to me... I was reading with a passive curiosity... until I read this detail!

It was an Aha! moment. Now I get it! Hoping to see some updates like everyone else.

    Interesting project...

I had small engine Preliminary Design at Allison for a while, and before that I was at Teledyne and was the keeper of the engineering files on the Howmet car... At both companines we tried to discourage folks from doing these kind of swaps for legal reasons, we were always terrified that somebody would drive one into a crowd and we would ge sued to beat the band.

Somebody mentioned a two speed tranny would help and they are probably right. I'd have thought that a powerglide would be a good way to go, they are really rugged, have a reverse, and you don't have to declutch to shift. You could use one gear around town (up to about 60-70 mph) and then shift up if you want to go really fast. While there is a big torque multiplication in the power turbine, the gearbox has a torque meter in it that is read out on a torque gage (actually just a calibrated pressure gage). You shouldn't overtorque the reduction gearbox too much or you could end up making metal (that's the term used in helicopter engineering for finding metal particles in the chip detector, the technical term for it is "that gearbox is makin metal" and means that it is not long for this world. The reduction gears (the ones that take the 36,000 rpm power turbine down to 6,000 rpm) are sized based on the maximum power output, but the expectation is that they will be turning at a relatively high speed when that happens. Winding up the gas generator to full power at a low power turbine speed can and will produce sufficient torque to destroy the RGB. Generally the bearings fail due to the high offset gear loads and.... Well you get the idea......

A two speed tranny would give you three times the low speed torque (and acceleration) and the car would be a lot more responsive around town, and the lag factor wouldn't be as bad. I fear that this will be a bit sluggish if you gear the car for top speed, but depending on how hard you are willing to push the RGB you might get away with it for a while.

Just a quick bump from a lurker to let you know we're still watching this thread for updates. I can't wait for the finished product! I know I speak for everyone here when I hope for some videos when it's done- I have no idea what it'll sound like, and I'm curious.

Please, please give us a progress report with pics! I have a buddy who wants to drop a turbo diesel in a beat-up 308 with a blown motor and run it on vegetable oil as a daily driver. I told him he needs thaerapy.

Stock size fuel tank? How much fuel does a turbine inhale? Cruising range?
