Thank you all for the most excellent replies, greatly appreciate all of them! I have some homework to do which I'll be embarking on. You guys are REAL people, I like that. I guess I'm getting a taste of some of your Southern hospitality and kindness, so thank you for that! OK, here's where you can call me whatever, but every day, I watch at least an hour of old Andy Griffith reruns. I love this show. Probably because deep down, I have always had a yearn for 'small town America' and this is something that I believe North Carolina has. Yes? No? Though I work in San Jose 2-4 days a week when not on travel outside of the SF Bay Area, my primary residence is in a sleepy little town called Sonora which is 125 miles east of San Jose. At my town, we have plenty of mountains and lakes and a small downtown just like Cary, NC. It's my escape from the rat race filled with people who cut you off on the highways and do not speak English. We have schools that start the day with the Pledge of Allegiance and the churches are full on Sunday. Men open the doors for the Ladies and kids will address you as Mr. or Mrs. Maybe all of this is not present in all of your beautiful state, but percentage wise, it's probably more apparent than most of the country!
^ IMHO, Cary is not a "small town". Yes, its a very nice place to live and within close proximity to some of the great qualities of NC, and the Triangle in particular, but its *not* 1950's Mt Airy in terms of small-town America that you described in your post above. Its probably not so easy, but book a flight into RDU and take your time driving westward on I-40 to explore the state. Travel from Raleigh to Asheville, then turn southeast to go into Charlotte. Make an excursion slightly northwest toward Lenoir, Hickory and Boone. I'll bet in 3-4 days you'd find what area you like best. -Daniel p.s. I'm in Winston-Salem, so stop on by. Things move at a glacial pace here.
Nc it all about what you are looking for. I discovered this after spending two months in Wilmington. Wilmington is very nice , people very friendly but it didn't offer what I was looking for . Charlotte does but to far from the coast . Now I will investigate Charleston. The mountains of Nc are beautiful and maybe when my kids go to college , will be ready for the mountains. Best is to narrow your areas and spend time there
I think you have it figured out - I didn't come to the mountains permanently until all my kids were out of the house and I sold my business' in the south - had not thought of it in those terms before
Smh ...who knows another than I won't be a northerner much longer Mars04 is the epitome of southern hospitality
At the time it was with USAA total coverage but I ended up getting nc underwriters or something like that. I can't recall. But the USAA coverage skyrocketed after Katrina.
When I read your post based on your previous comments I wanted to mention I had been to Jamestown. The small town exists but Mayberry, literally and figuratively, is a fantasy. That doesn't mean you should not pursue your dream. I also very much appreciate where you live. Home is where you make it.
Well, you were only three miles from Sonora. While I know that 'Mayberry' does not exist, as for home prices that I'm use to in California it sure does! The people weigh heavy for me. When I was in Durham four years ago, the common thread was how damn nice everybody was everywhere I went. Maybe the South just makes people flat out nice folks. Hell, I don't know!
That makes sense. Package policies are crazy expensive if you do not split the wind/hail. Thanks Juan! We need to get all the Ferrari Owners on the coast between Charleston and Wilmington - Then build an FCA headquarters - quit our day jobs & be THOSE guys..
We are taking a hard look at the possibility of coming out for 3-4 days the very top of November. My Wife is looking at Chapel Hill home prices in which my job is to pick her jaw up off the floor about every five minutes!
BTW, meet Melodie (Mrs PeterS) and my Daughter Chelsea. Melodie is a Banquet Manager at our local casino. Her past 20 years has been spent running her own high-end catering business ($1M per year range) and has owned three restaurants. Getting a job in corporate dining would be a real thrill for her in the hi-tech hub. Growing up in the food business is my Daughter Chelsea (taken last year) who is currently working full-time with Mom as a server. With a love for computer graphics, she has two years of college already behind her in which she would dig on some sort of internship at a hi-tech company. So she is like a party planner? Hummm... 'Cause ours just quit. (No bs.) So we are about to put out the job link.
I'm moving to North Carolina sometime this upcoming summer 2014. Unfortunately, my place of work will be on Ft. Bragg....anyone else work on post? If so, where would be the best place to live with respect to - distance to post - distance to other independent mechanics - access to 95S.....
I believe grayta was recently stationed there . Its only a few shops Italia cars Charlotte Karl in Charleston and one in Raleigh.
I like the camaraderie shown on this thread, and how you guys put the welcome mat out for PeterS. Very impressive! I'm not looking to move to North Carolina, but it does sound appealing.
