I am in negotiations for a 2016 F12 and I am wondering if the Taylor Made service in NYC is worth the trip? My dealer says its not that special, but I think it would enhance the connection to the car. If anyone could give me their thoughts on the experience would be appreciated. Thanks

I would be glad to share my experience in selecting various choices while putting together my F12 which by chance arrived about 2 weeks ago...I went through my local dealer, then the Atelier program in NYC and ultimately the Tailor Made program in Maranello..if you would like to send me a private message with your contact number, I can fill you in with what you can expect from each level of program...

tailor made offers paint colors and different kinds of material for the seats etc that can't be ordered though the Atelier program. tailor made is a limited opportunity to customize your Ferrari to a unique level of quality in the materials offered and the timely service they provide in showing how your choices will look and fit together when built.

I echo that as I am there in a months time for my tdf and when I had the opportunity at its launch to discuss it with LDM he confirmed that it was primarily aimed at the middle and Far East markets with some pretty odd and esoteric materials, but that was then and it has clearly evolved. I am particularly interested in the special paint colours etc and what to expect. All my dealer tells me is that it is a great experience-no **** Sherlock.

If you are going to get on an airplane to experience Tailor Made.. be sure it is in Maranello and not NY. Having access to the production line and factory experts can't be replicated in NY.

Totally agree. We did the Tailor Made session at the factory and it was an experience my wife and daughter also enjoyed very much. VIP tour in the morning, lunch at Montana and 4 hours in the Tailor Made studio. The choices were seemingly endless. Priceless.

I did tailor made in New York a couple months ago. It was great experience but it is only there at certain times... The girls came from Italy with samples and computers to make your car. They were only there for a few days.. It is not the same as the atelier that is there all the time... Go to Italy if you have time and get the full experience. That's what I will do next time..

going to Italy is more about the experience. I for one don't understand the customize it to the nth degree mind set. Unless you plan on keeping the car forever it makes it much more difficult to sell later. If ur trying to make a statement to get noticed by Ferrari there are much easier ways to do that. like write a check, buy xyz a patek, or give xyz access to your private plane.

if ur heart is really set on having a production car customized to the nth degree, no one can tell you "its not worth it". economically speaking, its def not worth it. you will never get your money back

    Its worth it! :)

Agreed if you have to travel a distance then go to Italy. Thats the best. If you live near NYC then give that a try.

Not necessarily correct. If you are speccing a limited edition car, the chances are that if you personalise it tastefully you will see your money back, and possibly more. Where it goes wrong is when you turn it into some tasteless mess which going Tailor Made can really open the door to.

    OP said f12
and IF is a very big word - ever see someone who thinks their customized house is worth 1200 a sq ft and the market says its worth 400? same thing

Thanks for the replies. My dealer informs me that if I want to make sure I get a production slot I am best to go to Italy. Apparently Taylor Made cars go to top of the list and with production on this model soon ending, it may be the only way to get a car before the cut-off.

Hmm, that's something I had not heard before.... Of course, dealers are incented and rewarded for Tailor Made cars, and for clients participating at the Atelier (NYC) and Maranello.

Given most Tailor Made cars are (much) more expensive due to the personalization, I could see them wanting to get that revenue captured.

On the other hand, cars with Extra Campionario, Special Requests, special paint and Tailor Made typically take (much) longer to produce...in some cases the materials need to be procured based on the order (eg. colored carbon), actually built by a supplier (eg. wood trim), or produced off-line (special leather or fabric treatments - ostrich skin, fish skin). The car will not be released to production until all the parts are ready to be installed....

FWIW, we considered Tailor Made, but in the end we were quite comfortable with the available exterior and interior finishes. We have spec'd our last 3 cars at the Atelier and it's a great experience and each of cars had a bit of personal touches that we would not have otherwise known, or been able, to order via the dealer.

    Good luck

It was also suggested to me that if i went to TM in Maranello, that a TM car would go into production quickly but as Entropy has commented, any car with Extra Campionario, TM, ect, has to wait until the requested changes can be produced... and you can run into numerous set-backs that are un-expected. I did go to TM and in my car, I requested all CF, interior and exterior be in Matte finish... remember all of the post regarding CF issues late last fall... caused me to wait over 12 months for my car to go code red10... hence "going to the front of the line" didn't quite happen....the bottom line, I loved going to see Maranello and all the choices and possibilities at TM, my car is finally here and it's what I wanted...ttforcedfed is correct that I will never breakeven on a resale. ... guess what, there isn't going to be a resale until I'm out of here....gacab, go check out Maranello and see what it's all about..you're about to purchase one of the greatest cars ever...make it your's !!
