    I just called VA DMV,

Finally my 1988 car qualifies for 25 year old antique car plates.
Why would I do this you ask?

    Pros
    Save money:
    -exempt from VA safety inspection
    -exempt from VA emissions inspection
    -exempt from county property taxes
-qualify for antique car insurance from Geico
-can still drive up to 250 miles to shows, leisure driving
-unlimited mileage for car show transport to destination of car events and allowed to drive it there as part of the event activities

    Cons
-can not be your daily driver
-can't drive it more than 250 miles from registered location
-don't get caught driving it to work

I don't drive it enough to justify paying so much for a weekend toy just for C&C. Savings ~ ($1300 a yr from prop taxes+insurance+inspections)
Thought I'll share this with you fellas.

    Best,
    Mike

    VA DMV:
    Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
Using Your Antique Vehicle Just For Show
If you plan to use your antique vehicle or trailer solely as a collector's item, you may register your vehicle with antique license plates or permanent vintage license plates.
Registering your vehicle either of these ways limits your use of the vehicle to:
Participation in antique car club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar events.
Testing its operation, obtaining repairs or maintenance, selling the vehicle or trailer, transportation to and from events as described in number 1 above and for the occasional pleasure driving not to exceed 250 miles from your residence.
Carrying or transporting passengers, personal effects or other antique motor vehicles being transported for show purposes.
You may not use your vehicle for general, daily transportation. This includes, but is not limited to, driving to and from work.

Tempting. We are still four years away from qualifying but no-can-do. Tee drives to work all the time. Plus, We need better range than a Tesla for goodness sake.

Besides, the governor needs the money for his legal team. Sorry, that's P&R

    Dave

P.S. Can you keep your personal plate?

    Added Cons:

    1. Minimizes spontaneity

    2. Anything associated with Geico

Otherwise and expense-wise, owning a classic Ferrari is very much like having a boat. Ya gotta pay to play... :)

P.S. Escape from the annual inspections almost makes it all worth it. However, that does force one to maintain their car. When I was in the Netherlands a recent inspection was a big selling point (much like working a/c in FL).

Years ago I lived in VA and this brings back memories. I belonged to the Coast Guard Auxiliary and people would register their boats in Maryland, I believe, to avoid this. We were in uniform, but not military. We had two duties. To conduct safety inspections if the owner agreed to do so and gave them a decal if they passed. No penalty if the did not.

Our second duty was to patrol the Chesapeake Bay 'To Provide Assistance If Requested'. We were reimbursed for fuel, but did not use much. Especially if we were using a sailboat that day. In five years I think we took action twice. First, somebody ran our of fuel. And second, a sailboat got grounded. Now if you drive a sailboat in the Chesapeake and claim never to have grounded your are either a liar, or have only been out three times.

Can't keep the standard white and blue personals, but can get a yellow antique personal with Robin 01. hey now... and with the savings, guess what I'm picking up!!!
All of my cars are in tip top operational order, my "OCD" is can't stand a broken car, so Robin will still be maintained as she should just like my other cars.

Dave you got me wanting a ---> 4 post lift and a Fiat 500 project car! Hopefully the pizza oven in the backyard can wait! lol

I want the galvanized option. Early one morning while touring someplace in The Low Countries decades ago I noticed an odd 2CV. OK. ALL 2CVs are odd. But this one stood out. No one was about the area so I walked all around it and looked closely. Probably have photos. THE ENTIRE THING WAS GALVANIZED. Right up there with the Right Hand Drive Corvair I ran across in Cyprus. I lived on a farm where we had all sorts of galvanized stuff. So I know what galvanizing looks like. I have not found a galvanized 2CV in this gallery:

Mine registered as an 'antique vehicle' in TX. Similar rules, but TX never checks where or how much you've driven it. I got a 5 year plate for it a few months ago. Never been stopped, pulled over, hassled. Also, only one rear plate on the car. Score!

I would run AP on mine if I could but then i would lose the Valenzo as a plate. They dont allow vanity AP's.

I have them on my '69 truck and before it went in for restoration, i drove it everyday, and didnt care what the rules were. Try to prove i wasnt on my way to get it fixed.

    I wouldnt worry about it.

In CT once a car is 25 years old it is eligible for antique plates. No limits on mileage or anything like that.

We also have a personal property tax on all cars that is collected by the town or city once per year.

For tax purposes, cars with antique plates have a maximum valuation of $500. This year, I paid $12 and change for the tax on the Mondial, up from $9-something. I should go to the town hall arguing that my car is not perfect, and I think I should only be paying $5 in tax.

I have had the Antique tags on my 82 Mondial 8 and a number of other vehicles for years and have never gotten grief or a ticker over it and at work it is often parked next to police only parking space--

Text of the Code of VA

    LIS > Code of Virginia > 46.2-730

"D. Antique motor vehicles and antique trailers registered with license plates issued or authorized for use under this section shall not be used for general transportation purposes, including, but not limited to, daily travel to and from the owner's place of employment, but shall only be used:

    1. For participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar events;

    2. On the highways of the Commonwealth for the purpose of testing their operation or selling the vehicle or trailer, obtaining repairs or maintenance, transportation to and from events as described in subdivision 1 of this subsection, and for occasional pleasure driving not exceeding 250 miles from the residence of the owner; and

    3. To carry or transport (i) passengers in the antique motor vehicles, (ii) personal effects in the antique motor vehicles and antique trailers, or (iii) other antique motor vehicles being transported for show purposes. "

Note that it says shall not be used for "DAILY travel to and from owners place of employment"

I have yet to get a definition of "daily" but reckon it means it you drove it 5 days in the same week. This implies that occasional driving to work to show it off to co workers is permitted. Pleasure driving is permitted and it is always a pleasure when I am driving a Ferrari. Could always be taking it to work to show to potential buyer--how often have you been asked if you want to sell that?

About the only one's I have heard of getting charged with antique tag violations are those who have an old pickup truck being used for trash collection, yard maintenance company, or construction work that have obvious safety issues. And from what I hear from the deputies even then that charge tends to get dismissed with the defective equipment charge holding up.

The 250 miles is how far from home for just a pleasure trip--limit does not apply if going to show etc.

My insurance is with State Farm and they are very reasonable for agreed value full coverage.

Also don't have to finagle a front plate on it.

I have only been stopped once on antique tags and that was because the officer wanted a closer look at the 68 Newport Convertible I was driving. I put about 3000 a year on Mondial 8 with antique tags and no hassles.

For what it is worth the fine and fees if happened to get charged and convicted is minimal $91.

Sadly to report that my daily 'Robin 01' is now registered as an Antique as she hit her 25 year old mark to qualify for Antique Plates in the state of Virginia. After beating myself over whether to switch my registration to a more sensible Antique Plates, I finally did it. I don't drive her often enough to justify paying for VA inspections & emissions, property taxes, and higher insurance rates. I have four cars at the moment and keep Robin as a treat. My wife likes it as we are saving money for other things, but I'm wondering if I have made a mistake or just taking advantage of opportunities in front of me. The good thing is I do get to keep my personalized 'ROBIN 01' reserved for me and will be transferred to Yellow Antique Plates. And of course CnC and pleasure drives anytime I want are all acceptable as I do now.

    Cheers

In southern Oregon the benefits aren't as great. Our vehicle registration is cheap and every other year. Also we don't have any inspections at all for our vehicles.

I ended up going with a Special Interest plate, not historic. Main reason is that there is only one plate. There are limitations on how I'm supposed to use it, but I travel so much for work I can't drive it as often as I'd like. Historic and special interest do not have any renewal, my plate has no sticker and it's a forever plate. Also, there is no personalized plates available for these so you get what you get.

Upside, I do like the color of the plate, it's an old style Oregon plate in color.
